Running is a bit different than other sports. Coaches often keep things close to the vest, whereas in football if the star quarterback was sitting out from a top 5 or 10 team there would be several local articles and the national media would pick it up. And we'd know why the athlete would not be competing. With running it seems to be the coach's prerogative to reveal whether an athlete is competing and why or why not.

Between FERPA and HIPAA, I wouldn't reveal an injury to the media either.

I heard its actually fetal alcohol syndrome. Heartbreaking to say the least

Just listened to a 19 minute podcast with Corey Ihmels and he did not mention Allie once. Not at all. Its like he doesn't have the National XC runner-up/top returner on his team. Very strange. Makes me think something serious is going on with Allie and that she is indeed out for the season.

Ally has always been tiny and less developed than peers her age, well before she started running competitively.

name me a single time that a football or basketball coach didn't play the #1 or #2 athlete in the country for the first seven weeks of the season without saying a single word about why not.

Grant Fisher raced in September at the Stanford Invite last year.

I live in Boise and drive through the area that the team trains on. I see the team training all the time, and no Allie this fall. I think she's injured

I guess that's possible, but I doubt it. If an athlete is held out to limit # of races or because of a minor injury, we probably would not hear about it, but if an athlete has a major injury and is out for the whole season, typically it would be announced.

Agreed with jjjjjjj - in this case it does seem odd for BSU to not put out some sort of statement regarding her condition and her probability of racing in November. It is hard for me to see what is gained by BSU XC team by keeping her status top-secret. However, I can understand Ihmels not mentioning anything if Allie (or her family) asked for whatever is going on to remain private.

Are things not well at BSU for Allie? I'm sure her original first college choice would love to have her transfer and would take great care of her. It is not too late, Allie you can still be a DUCK!

The same private gal who had a big Newsweek article touting her as the next American running phenom? Well then a quick statement as to why she isn't running would end the curiosity and endless speculation/ rumor mill. But I agree as people that tiny unnaturally (because no adult is that size even if they're short) tend to have trouble making it healthy thru 4 yrs of college running much less a pro career. Not sure it is all the coach's fault as she clearly came into the program like that but he also let that barefoot gal run at Griak last year and those pictures were tough to look at (and have since been taken down.)

Girl is at Coastal Carolina and looks the same. #1 girl at BSU and steeple/5,000 girl look a lot thinner than Allie. Allie doesn't have that anorexic look.

Doctors will have blood work done to test calcium, vitamin d, and estrogen but its not something a coach or athletic dept will order like a drug test. You can also have a DEXA scan which like takes pictures of the vertebrae to test density (I have no idea what the actual science is but the results show pictures of several vertebrae with some numbers). It's all testable but limited degree to how much it actually tells you about bone health.

I had something like 6 stress fractures in 2.5 years (ending with a femoral stress fracture that had me out of commission for over a year) and when I had the blood work and the DEXA scan done (multiple times) the results came back normal.

Well I hope she doesn't have another stress fx, but was quite surprised when I heard she was running the trials just 5 weeks after coming back from a tibial stress fracture. It seemed like too much too soon to me and who knows if maybe that played a role.

I mean, all she has to do is eat, and her coaches have to give a damn. Peloquin in on the same track, but like Molly Seidel last year, she will probably grab a national title or 2 before she eventually fractures those brittle little bones.
