But Aouita is not there . He was ranked #1in the world at 800m and 10k. Had the WR at 5000k!

Of course 3:31 and 2:03 M is just awesome range. We've got to give credit for what's actually done. But a 27 something 10k guy could probably go sub 2:09 in the marathon? Aouita should be in it because of his demonstrated raw leg speed.

Having 1:43. 800m speed plus sub 13 5k speed is hard to come by.

Although, Bekele or Geb might have been capable of a sub 3:30 1500? And it's difficult for me to believe that a 3:31 guy can't reach at least 1:44 for 800.

Why are you trying to list "the best runner over a wide range of distances" when the thread title clearly says "best range of any distance runner ever"?

The thread title is asking best range not best runner. You also have to consider that 7 minute/mile is the accepted pace that is considered running. That would make Oleg Kharitonov eligible as he ran 100 miles at a 6:52.8 pace. He also ran a 31:24 10k. That range of 93.79 miles would still not be enough.

Don Ritchie ran the 1/4 mile while in high school. (He actually ran the 100 yds and 220 yds in grade school) He later ran 100 miles in 11:30 which is under 7 minute pace. That would make his range 99.75 miles.

He is CLEARLY the winner of this thread.

Now go start another thread about who ran the fastest times over a short range of under 26 miles. And don't come back here until you have run over 200, 000 miles!!

aouita woua buried this question if he'd run his best possible races in '84/'85

albeit he ran 3'29.4wr, his best 1500 was the epic race with cram of 3'29.71

he ran a criminal ~ 12m extra on bends which in itself offers intrinsic of ~ 3'28.0

then consider the uneven pace & fact he finished off with a 52-high finish with ~ 2.5m extra on penultimate bend, making more of an intrinsic 52-mid !!! finish

if he'd run his perfect, route-1 race at even-pace that day, with drafting to bell, he wouda been looking at

~ 3'26-mid/high !!!

this intrinsic figure gives credence to his '84 run in grosseto where it is reported he finished a 3'34.8 with a 36.1 finish

then consider he almost caught cram on last lap from proverbial mile behind at bell, cram, a guy who ran 1'42.8 that year with ~ 5m extra on bends off slow 1st lap in tactical race, making cram an intrinsic ~ 1'41-mid/high guy that year in a 49-high to bell, aouita that year probably had something like

~ 1'42-flat

speed at the time

remember, he won bronze in '88 at 800 with 1'44.06 with ~ 8m extra on bends, worth

~ 1'43.0 !!!

for route-1 race, all done with a strapping so thick on his thigh that it looked like he was being prepared for an amputation !

& all this when no one who followed him wouda reckon he was anywhere near his '84 or '85 shape even if 100% fit in '88

if aouita had run a serious 800 in '85 & his ideal 1500 that year or in grosseto the year before, his numbers woud start with

I won't step into the predicted times arena, but I agree that Aouita (with respect to his PBs) did leave a fair amount on the table in at least some of the distances he ran for a few reasons. For example, concentrating on the 800m while in his late 20s and towards the end of his period of domination (not that he/we knew it at the time) was a curious decision in my opinion. The guy was so good at so many distances it was almost a detriment to his ability to maximize his potential in a single event...not exactly fair to say, but kinda the jack of all trades, master of none syndrome - at least to some extent.

I heard Ian Stewart say that Mo ran 1:45 in a training time trial once.

Choge's 2006 Commonwealth games gold was epic, but his lack of outdoor world and Olympic medals counts against him.

Yiannis Kouros owns the WR in 100miles, 1000km, 1000miles, 12h, 24h, and 48h. That would make his range 900miles.
