I ran a 12:48 5000m solo on the track yesterday morning. I know that's not the world record, but it's fairly close. It lends further proof that these types of efforts are possible if you are really determined. I did my run for UNICEF (although I'm not sure if they benefited much from my run). Also, I was abused as a kid, so I can handle a lot of pain.
I'll make another attempt at the WR next week. I might try to get the 5000 and 10000 in the same run.
I'm inclined to believe the woman. Wasn't the record held by a woman very recently? Are people really up in arms about disproving that someone walked a lot in a matter of a few weeks?

Why are you inclined to believe her when her story is already showing major holes in it?
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - and she doesn't have it. It's a great disservice to those record-setters that meticulously planned and actually performed the trek under the watchful eyes of the AT community to be pushed aside by this glory-seeking loon.

It doesn't disservice those people at all. Had they completed the route in a faster time, it wouldn't be a debate. They walked a bunch. This girl walked the same amount a little less slowly.
I'd be inclined to believe her too but the picture of her at the end is incriminating evidence. Your body cannot look like that after such a trek.

Depends on how many calories she ingested. If she truly did walk up to 20 hours a day that means she would be burning up to 8,000 calories plus a bmr of 2,000 = 10,000 calories... She could do so on half that and eat the deficit in town on pizza and pancakes. You could hit a restaurant every other day on her miles.
6 glazed honey buns = 2500
6 servings trail mix = 600
4 top ramen = 800
4 snickers = 900
is what she could carry and would only add to up about 3 lbs for two days

I hope she gets a ton of publicity for her little stunt. Now do I believe her? Heck no, but the fact that she can claim that shows "stuntiness" of such endeavors.
Besides I thought the whole ethic of ultra folks was that they are all crunchy hippies and don't care about things like competition, records, etc.? If so then whether did or did not actually do what she claims shouldn't matter, it's all good, right?
Sure, this is very possible, if you only sleep 6 hours a night you need to average 22:30 per mile. 4.5 hours and 24:20/mile. Most importantly, if you are not running you are conserving calories significantly compared to running. Problem is she just doesn't look like she did it.

Do a little research and then come back to us. She went a bit faster UNSUPPORTED than the fully supported record that was just set under many watchful eyes - yeah sure.

Did not happen. A commenter on site named GearJunkie met her on the trail. She told him that she had dropped acid on the trail and liked to take multiple zero days to get drunk at nearby towns on the way. Truly an extraordinary athletic achievement. The problem is that there are so many media whores willing to give the story legs. Unbelievable and very sad.
When I searched for posts mentioning her on facebook I found a picture of her posted by "Stanimals 328 hostel & SHUTTLE service" with a picture of her right next to a running vehicle. Can I upload images? I have a screenshot. I don't think it's a smoking gun but it raises lots of questions..
She's not in the car but....How is this picture taken??? The shuttle just happened to be by the trail at the same time?
Did the shuttle pick her up, take her to the hostel and then drop her off at the same place? I guess that's a claim she could make. Is that really self supported though? I mean...the hostels aren't right on the trail right?
If it did pick up and drop off at the exact spot....who is to say it didn't drop her off at a different place...further up the trail?
If she would cut out all the walking crap, she sounds like she would be fun to party with.

- Announce your intentions in advance. Like a true gentleman, pay your respects to those who came before you, and tell them what you intend to attempt and when.
- Be an open book. Invite anyone to come and watch or, better yet, participate. This makes your effort more fun and any result more believable.
- Record your event. Write down everything immediately upon completion. Memory doesn't count.
This woman didn't really do any of these or follow much common sense. Even if I never had any knowledge of any guidelines or generally accepted ideas of how to claim an FKT, if I were attempting one I would at least tell people about it ahead of time and make lots of people aware of it while underway.

It sounds like people are just butthurt that the "casual stroll" WR was broken by a woman. As the poster above mentioned, you could accomplish this without ever going under 20:00/mile. If she did jog a mile every now and then, it's easy to see her doing it in the time she said.

i've hiked good portions of the AT in NH and VT, and moving at 3mph on many stretches of the 'trail' just isn't doable. these aren't groomed trails, they're strewn with rocks that make just staying healthy for such a long trip is an accomplishment.
