I have raced her too. I saw her for the first time at a race in Mexico. I also saw a picture of her from a street vendor who takes pictures every year. Her picture from the year before was of a athlete, not near as leaned out or athletic looking as she was the following year, when I met her. At the time I just thought she must of really started getting serious, lost some extra pounds from all the mileage she did, and found herself deep in the game of elite racing. It is sad to find that our sport can be tainted so easily.

Try and see if this idea works, yet you have to pay to file the suit. A USADA expert will cost you in the range of $5,000 for a statement. Just ask Lagat, he paid well into 6 figures to get out of the mess and have his B sample thrown out. This is a costly business, so try it. Better luck with Eddy though since he made way more money!

Saucony would never pay for that legal bill. That leaves Eddy and Deeja out on their own. Nike would pay for the Lagat Bill. Keep in mind that they had a commercial with Lagat running at the time.

He said he'd take her to small-claims court. In my state, you can't use any legal help in small-claims court, even paralegals. So attorney fees probably aren't an issue here. And it only costs $20 to file a case in small-claims court in my state.

But you're also limited in what you can win in small-claims court ($4,000 here), so it wouldn't make much sense to spend $5K on an expert witness.

Seems to me it would be worth a try. The rap on small-claims court is that it's hard to squeeze payment out of a losing defendant, but you can have liens placed on their property and their wages seized (I think Deeja has a steady job as an air-traffic controller, so that may not be hard.). I think that costs little or nothing. I don't know anything about jurisdiction, though.

Yes, but how many out of comp tests and when, if ever, will USADA use out of comp tests on the Kenyan and Russian roadwhores who are doped to the gills? Our govt. issues these jokers work visas and then they aren't subject to the same level of scrutiny as American athletes. Let's see an OOC tester show up and the door of one of the Russian or Kenyan houses here and see some reactions!

Also of interest is the comparable testing numbers in the various sports on the USADA website. 1600 track and field athletes show up as having been tested, compared to the next highest number, 600 for swimming, and then down to 300's for basketball and cycling. And out of almost all of those sports, track is seen as one of the dirtiest.

The only possible way I see to clean up track is to eliminate the money. Track was pretty clean before the money was shot into the sport. Of course, this will never happen. Sadly.

The USADA, suprisingly, tests US athletes. It's up to the international federation (WADA) to test foreign athletes and their national anti-doping agency. I'm not sure if Kenya or Russia even have their own anti-doping agency. Fact is, if all you have to worry about is the WADA or IAAF testing you then you have it much better than if you had both the international and national federations giving you out of comp. drug tests. As long as you don't have a national body testing you then all you have to worry about is being tested after world records, Olympics and the like.

You must be joking! You have no historical perspective!

Drug cheating has been around for a long time.

Do the names Irina Press and Tamara Press mean anything to you? These two were competing in the late 1950's and early 1960's.

The DDR teams for decades?

Jarmila Kratochvilova?

I could go on - but there was not a lot of money in the sport back then - but a lot of stress on National prestige.

Please don't make statements like you did without understand the context and history of the sport.

I don't find it surprising that USADA tests its own athletes, but there is no reason not to extend its pervue to all athletes competing, residing, and training in the US. They have been issued visas to work here, and should therefore be subject to the same labor laws as US "workers." Speaking of testing, Glenn, how many of your events request USADA/WADA testers or else do their own testing. And you're a little off base about there not having been money in the sport in the DDR days - no prize or company bucks, but plenty of governmental funding. There was plenty of money flowing into the state run doping machines, but it was coming from different sources than today's money.

Again, a huge part of the problem in this sport is that the athletes at the top just don't care. They are into CYOA mode. If they were honest and clean then two items they should demand (and believe me, whatever they demand they get):

1) Agents cannot double as Elite Athlete Coordinators for any USATF sanctioned event.

2) Foreign athletes wishing to compete for money in this country must pay a hefty fee to help support drug testing for foreign athletes. I don't see the other "professional" sports claiming that we (USA) can't test Pedro Martinez, Vlad Divac, etc because they're not US citizens. I know there are differences between the sports, but steps must be taken to prevent 45year old Russian women who have pr'd in the last 18 months, from taking money from clean athletes. Road Race testing in this country is pretty much a joke and the events being tested in 2004 were leaked by the High Performance Division to all those coaches and agents "in the know."

This sport will never be professional as long as it is run in the manner that it is.
