I was a 46.0 guy. I always trained with the CC team during the summer in my home town as my school was on quarters and started a whole month behind. With that one month of CC training, running a 4:50 was pretty easy. I'm certainly no Usain Bolt and I'm sure he could do much better than that if he wanted to. I'm sure he could easily break the 400m record if he wanted to as well, but that is a whole different discussion.

I ran 5:00 as a 13 year old running less mileage than Bolt per week. Around 8-10 mpw if you're interested. At that time my 400m was around 62sec and my 3200m was around 12:30.

Some of you geniuses try to cite some kind of physiology claiming that what makes Bolt so good at 100m-400m will make him terrible at 1600m. Sure. He's still easily well into the 4-minute range.

If all of these great sprinters could EASILY run under 5 with no endurance training, then it would stand to reason that, with the right training, they'd all be phenomenal distance runners as well. This is an either/or thing, folks.
No, it doesn't stand and there's no reason in what you've said. A good sprinter won't adapt well to endurance training .
There's quite a few guys that can run sub-5 going off just their 100m/200m training. I've seen jumpers run low-5 in their first attempt without really trying toward the end.

Could you remind me what Ashton Eaton's best 1500 time is? These decathletes run a 1500 at the end of their other events right? Should be nice and fresh... I'm not saying any sprinter can break 5, I'm just willing to give one of the best athletes of all time the benefit of the doubt.

The fact of the matter is that no two sprinters are the same, I guess we'll never know unless he tries it.
Side note: Bolt is a good soccer player. Not sure what that might mean exactly but it would make me believe he can hold up better than most sprinters for four laps.

I've seen a 10.8 guy run 17:5X in a local 5K race on a whim. I ran it with him so don't say there was cheating involved. Guy was a short-distance sprinter, no mid-distance or endurance training.
I'm not saying every sprinter could do that, and I know there's a big difference between 10.8 and 9.8. To suggest that none of the 9.8 guys are in good enough condition to match that 17:5X is ludicrous.
It doesn't really take an endurance build to run sub-5. For a guy who is pretty good at running in general, and does some hard running workouts without carrying an obscene amount of extra mass, it'll happen at least after a few tries. Whether there's any motivation to do that is an entirely different story.

The short-distance guy ran 17:5x. Could he have run sub 38 then and there?

Aston Eaton is nowhere as quick as Bolt over 100m and he trains at least somewhat for the 1500m. Aston would also beat Bolt in a 400m.
All these posts 10.8 guys that might be able to do it, who cares?
The faster you get over 100m the slower you'll get over the mile. 9.6 is a hell of a lot faster than 10.8.
Bolt is purely fast twitch. And he's HEAVY.

He can kick a ball around a bit thats it.
Now he might be decent in the NBA. He's also too skinny for the NFL and his legs are too long, he'd get hurt from tackles.
The only sports he could probably do are basketball and sprinting.

Everyone's different, and I don't personally know Bolt (obviously he's currently the greatest sprinter of all time. He's freakishly gifted), but multiple 10.4-10.7 sprinters are not breaking 4:40 with zero endurance training. You might find one on a rare occasion who can do something like that and that means he needs to move up, because he's not a 100m sprinter, he's a 400/800m guy with great speed.
Yes of course. Worst case he runs 4:50 or so in an all out effort, but I'd say he has a shot at 4:3X.
A guy with 45-46 sec 400m ability would be able to go sub 2:00 even in crap cardio shape. I think running 2 laps in 55-56 would be doable for him.
If he manages low 1:50s for an 800m, a sub 4:40 mile is not out of the question even with a significant performance drop off.
With a few months of basic conditioning and maintenance speedwork I bet he could get down to the 4:10's. It would be completely pointless, but possible imo.
Depends, if he is super drugged up -- like eyeballs level-- he might be able to crack 6 min. Either way, he's a fraud and everything that's wrong with our sport. But oh yeah NBC LOVES Bolt. They love all the doped up morons.
