Really? That's all they care about? Then why did they drop Manzano? He's notorious for running terrible until it's a championship race and that didn't save him.

You know who "jogged it in"? Mac Fleet. And he ran 7 seconds faster.

Did I say 3:58 is "all he can do"? No I did not say that. I said it is indicative of a lack of physical and mental fitness. He doesn't have the standard. Not even close actually. So he either gave up or blew up and jogged it in in a race that was won in 3:39.... Really great potential looking ahead a few weeks to the OT.

Does Nike care if he gives it all and only runs 3:41? "No, they don't"? Are you stupid? Of course they care. A few weeks out from the Olympic Trials and a guy runs all out and is still 6 seconds off the standard.... Any sponsor would care. That is indicative of a bad bet. And like you said, it's all about selling gear and having athletes at the biggest races of the year....

Leer will not qualify or be invited to any of the big races running even his best time so far this year. So yeah I'd say Nike cares. And I'd say he's doing a good job of proving them right in their decision to drop him.

There is nothing you can derive from this result.

Nike can (or could have, since I believe Leer was already dropped). You can not.

You do not know his fitness levels. You do not know his health. You do not know what his expectations were. You know sh*t, other than he ran 3:58.

Leo Manzano was probably dropped because he's getting older and he's 5'5. But we don't really know. There always things that happen behind the scene that we are unaware of. Leo has been great in big races, but most betting people would say those days are over.

Will Leer is also getting older. In fact, he's the same age as Leo. His days as a sponsored runner were limited and were bound to end. BUT it would NOTHING to do with a 3:58 in a single race.

Nike cares about the WHY, not the WHAT. They care about the whole arch. How old are you. How popular are you. How much does the average person know about you. A couple of thousand hard core running fans do not move the needle for nike. They are after the average person.

And really, you are holding Mac Fleet's 3:51 out as a way to jog it in.

One you shut down and jog it in, it really does not matter any more. 3:47, 3:51, 3:58, 4:30. It's all the same. It's a bad result. You have stopped racing and it might as well be a DNF.

That's why I said he's just reaffirming Nike's decision to drop him. Because he was dropped well before this race. And you can throw your age thing out the window too. They care about marketability and results, not age (i.e. Bernard Lagat is a masters runner now and is still a Nike athlete). Why is Lagat still a Nike athlete? Because he is marketable and still produces results.

You don't think Mac Fleet jogged it in? Do you think he blew up then? He ran a 66 second last lap after coming through 1100 in 2:45 (not fast).

And it's not just this race. Leer hasn't run that well all season. Look at his splits. After a 42.xx first 300 he runs a 61.xx second lap and is over 3 seconds off the front with 2 laps to go. I am in no way saying Leer is a 3:58 1500 runner and he ran to his potential yesterday. What I have said since my first post is he is not fit and it was a very wise decision for Nike to drop him earlier this season. Let's put his prior races this season together with this performance and call a spade a spade. Leer is not fit just a few weeks out from what is really his last shot at an Olympic Team. I would not be surprised to see him knocked out in the prelims at the OT.

Not that it matters, nottalotta, but Leer did not shut it down and jog in, he kept running as hard as he could, it just wasn't hard. Fleet did shut it down, two entirely different situations.

This is amazing to me, because I vividly remember racing Johnny at an invitational mile his senior year of high school. He was one of the favorites but had one of the most spectacular blow ups I've ever seen and lost to a bunch of guys who had no business beating him (including me).

I remember thinking this kid was a huge head case, man I sure got that one wrong. Good for him, he took it to another level. I must have just caught him on a really bad day. Will be rooting for him at the trials.

Does anyone else think that NJNY and Brooks Beasts just have too many athletes and people get lazy just trying to get an Olympic Trials standard instead of Olympic GAMES standard? Gags and Mackey can't give the individual attention needed to develop as well as possible. Many of their members don't receive much at all, so why not join smaller group?

Couldn't be further from the truth regarding Gag. Ask any of his runners. He's like Midas. Everything he touches turns to gold. What I mean is, his runners generally get faster, love the club, love him and that is a far different scene than most clubs/coaches today.

Whelp it looks like Alexander didn't wear the ME kit but he smoked another good field and of all the guys likely to run the 1500 at the Trials he's got the fastest time after running 3:36.26 today at Princeton. (Can't think Murphy runs 1500 cus he has the A standard in the 800.).
