The trials 800 won't go slow. The trials 1500 might. As an inferior runner to several contenders in either event, a slow race is his only hope. Therefore the 1500. If he was confident in making the 800 he wouldn't be chasing times in the 1500 two weeks before trials.
Murphy's best hope is to get the Oly time then luck out in a tactical 1500. After Centro and Manzano it will be a crapshoot of 3:35+ guys who shouldn't even go to the games.
Neither, Solomon, nor Symmonds, nor Loxsom can go 1:45 at will. Symmonds hasn't broken 1:47 this year, Cas has run poorly this year outside of that 600, and Solomon is having a rough year as well. Berian and Brazier are the only ones truly faster than him in his current shape. And Manzano isn't going to be top 3. I put his chances at 10 percent.
His chances at the 800 being 10 percent or his chances at the 1500?
You mentioned all half milers but then Manzano who's a miler.

Back in the day, everyone did if they wanted. Schools considered it one long track season for school record purposes until after the last meet of summer.

I hope we can all agree on this: Whatever choice Murphy makes, unless he wins a gold medal in Rio, he will be criticized and ridiculed here for that choice. And furthermore, in the unlikely event that he does win that medal, we will be sure to cast suspicion on his rise to greatness.
