Earlier this afternoon I was in agreeance with getting him in the Bowerman. Now I'm more inclined to put them BOTH in the International. It won't give Nike or the HSers as much publicity, but it will give them a more equitable race to run a realistic times.

NO NO NO.. I have no interest in seeing the top two run a JV race at Pre.
Save that for the adidas meet or the Brooks meet. I want to see someone try to step up against the big boys like Alan Webb did. Hunter's advantage is he has a lot more experience in big races as he's been doing them for months. Slagowski's advantage is he's faster.
wejo why are you so lame? why is it such a bad idea to have 2 sub 4 guys with similar 800PRs as well in the same pro race?
nol lets only put in hunter cause the "scene" likes him more, he is going to OU, he has more experience blah blah blah, just put them both in and see what happens, why pick favorites when they are both sub 4, both similar PRs and it would be GREAT for the sport!

The "JV" international mile will be far faster than any high school race in history. Why put the pressure on Hunter and Slagowski now to perform with the "big boys"? If either of them (or both of them) have an off-race, the idiots on this board will be posting threads in seconds saying "they're both done..."
The only reason to run these two in the Bowerman Mile is for Nike/UofO own selfish purposes, as Oregon always loves to display their new prizes to the alumni donors.
Pretty sure Drew knows that he will be at the back, removed from the jockeying for position he would get in the National mile. Yes, the pace of the National mile will be more in line with what he has run, but it will probably be pretty crowded with pace changes, running in lane 2, etc. Pretty sure he is excited about the opportunity to run the Bowerman and does not think he is going to be battling Kiprop for the win (or even beat anyone, quite possibly). He's not stupid. Pretty sure he thinks this is his best chance at running fast. Pretty sure he jumped at the chance to be in the Bowerman, fully aware of what it will be like. I don't think Drew feels any pressure to do this at all, it is what he wants to do and apparently the meet organizers are OK with it.
I know everyone is saying that Slagowski deserves the same shot as Drew, but the fact of the matter is that there's no way in hell that Slagowski runs the double that Drew did recently (1:48.mid and 8:43). I think had he been there that day, and run the same events, we would have seen 1:47 and 9:30 out of him. I think Drew will run 3:53-3:54 in the Bowerman, and I think Slagowski will run 3:57ish. I understand that he ran his all alone, and that's the exact reason why I think he will struggle. He will be getting jostled, there will be pace changes, multiple moves to cover, etc. Drew has run his times in competitive races, Slagowski has run his in races where he can get into a rhythm. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but I think Drew is better equipped to handle an elite level race right now and the dynamics that come with it.

Precisely. What's the difference between the HSers running ~3:57 behind a slew of americancs 3:53-57 or foreigners running 3:48-52???

I don't think it should come down to a Hunter v. Slagowski "who is better equipped" conversation. They're both HUGE talents who have shown an ability to run fast and come up big in tough situations (ex/ Slag throwing down fast 800s/miles in smaller races, Hunter running through harsh winters and illness to go sub 4 and close a 9s gap to win the DMR at Penn by a hair). They both deserve to be in this race and who is more deserving shouldn't be a topic of discussion until they get to race head to head.

Why is that? First, this will be a rabbited race, not a sit and kick race. Also, Hunter has also run 1:48. And 3:57.... Indoors. I don't know why people think sprint speed means better finishing speed. It doesn't.

For several reasons this post didn't make sense.
Michael has 1:46 capability and has shown the ability to drop a 57 on the third lap BY HIMSELF in a sub-4 all-HS meet. I feel both Hunter and Slagowski are capable of 3:55, but Slagowski can marginally be better at handling a 2:54 @1200 and still have some run left in him.
Hopefully both can get in. It could be the biggest distance duel in prep history.

I have several issues with this:
1. He's shown 1:48 capability, in that he's run 1:48. Being a 48-mid 400m guy is right in line with his 800m.
2. In order to be at 2:54 @ 1200 (409m to go in a mile), he would need to AVERAGE 57-58 for three laps, not just run a single 57 like you pointed to.
3. His PR before two weeks ago was 4:05. Are you suggesting that he drops 10 seconds in a month? There is untapped potential, but that is a SERIOUS jump.
Hunter ran a 4:01 1600 11 months ago. He has been at this level a lot longer and has shown improvement in distances above and below the mile. An 1200m race between the two would be a firework show, but anything longer I'd put all of my chips on Hunter.
As a t&f agent (anony) specializing in mid-D, my feeling is that Slagowski is more talented than Hunter. Hunter is more developed at the moment; Slagowski's time will come. I haven't seen a raw talent in HS like this since Webb.
And after seeing his solo 148, I think it is safe to say, with average conditions in a paced race, Slagowski could pull off 146 mid. The talent required to go 148 solo is substantial. if MS doesn't run 2s faster under optimal PR conditions with competition, I'd be very surprised. He's a fierce competitor - no doubt about that.
