I would just like to remind whoever was offended last time that amphetamines were legal in the 60's. Without them nobody would have run better than 3:56 and no sub 4's in high school at all.

And today's distance magically got so better due to genetics. Well, genetics doesn't change that fast. So, every HS sub 4 is suspect, and every mile under 3:56 is suspect.
In this era, Ryun would not be overtrained until an NCAA coaching gets him.
