Are you saying there is something magical about running fast times at age 29? The average age of the top sprinters in the world right now is probably around 32. Also the average age of most sprint world records in around 29.

A good telltale sign with this clown is looking at pictures of him from when he started college - then all of a sudden his times drop dramatically when he put on almost 30 lbs of muscle. it's a shame that the folks in charge enable so many cheats because of political correctness and certain sponsors.
Do you really expect someone to look the same at age 18 and as they do at 29. Every athlete in every sport is going to be bigger and strong 11 year later. Yes, he was convicted of inadvertent use of DHEA. Merritt's case was actually straight forward in that he said what was using as was able to clearly demonstrate inadvertence.

I agree. That's a very realistic time for Merritt to post this year. I think the whole idea of breaking Johnson's WR is going to be hard. I don't know how Van Niekerk is doing (heard he ran 44.98??)
But yeah anyways, Merritt's going to do very well this year. I reckon he could dip under 19.7 in all honesty.

Have you been training and competing seriously in the 100m since you were a teenager? If so, then I would say your PR at 31 years of age is surprising.
But the reason many casual track enthusiasts set PRs later in life is because they haven't been competing professionally for the past decade. So their previous personal bests are pretty "soft". I'm 35 years old. But I'm sure I could set PRs in a few different events I never really trained seriously for over an extended period of time, if I were to get serious about it now.
On the other hand, a guy like LaShawn Merritt? He has been a world class sprinter since he was a teen. It has been his job for quite some time now. So those PRs he set before are the result of serious training, coaching, and high level competition over an extended period of time. It does not stand to reason that he would be setting PRs at almost 30 years of age. Especially not in the 200m where there is almost zero aerobic component. He's doped, and so are the other guys at his level.
If the Drake Relays has half the weather conditions we're having this weekend, expect sub 44 in April in Iowa. Just a fly-over state with another world class field entered in the men's 400.

Not to mention the toll that volume of hard training and competition takes on the body. It's not simply a matter of when our body naturally peaks, but the wear and tear from years of pushing so hard.
Interestingly both Gatlin and Merrit served suspensions .. so (doping aside) maybe some time off served them well. Mo Farah apparently didn't train quite as hard as maybe he could've in his younger years .. and now he's the world's best in his early 30's.
Of course, thy could all be doping as well.

200/400 guys are not distance runners. They don't work on endurance then build in the speed. My bet is Merritt has been working hard in the gym over winter to improve his strength and power, and doing hard 200m training to improve his speed. He runs a great 200m PB. Then he will add in the 400m special endurance and lactic workouts through the season up to Rio. His 200m may not improve at all

he says this 19.7 speed will help him run 1st 1/2 of 400 with much less effort & thus more to give in last 200
this means he can run the 1st 200 by maybe 3 or 4 tenths faster than last year & bring his same legendary back-half to the race
43.35 may not be noticeable to you, but it is what I believe Merritt will run and is an unbelievably fast time. Why would I predict the world record will go? That is a knee jerk reaction. Based on this run the best Merritt can hope for is 43.25 but I don't see him running that fast.

That is exactly what I said. He has been working on speed not endurance, without reading the interview. I literally wrote that with text. Maybe you were confused because I wrote 'strength' for it's common usage to mean 'to be physically strong' rather than the distance runner usage of 'can run far'. You have no idea about training though so I'll let that one slide.
So saying he will get faster over the 200m later in the season is not necessarily true, he has been working on speed last couple months. He will start training like a 400 guy now and maybe get slower over 200m. Does that compute?
I'd like the world record too, does that mean I'll get it? You cannot 'research' future unknown events.
Like I said it is early doors, let's see how the season progresses before talking about world records. If he runs a couple 43s before July and looks in great 400m shape then we can talk about the world record. Merritt just ran a 2, not a 4.
I don't know if you caught the 400m final on TV, but if you did you would have seen Merritt was in sub 20 shape. This is a paper PB, for sure he could have run well sub 20 last year. We don't know exactly how fast though.

Michael Johnson was not capable of running 19.32 in 1999 when he set the 400m WR. He was a 19.7 that year.
