It amazes me that everyone rips athletes for basically giving say nothing, nearly fictional interviews (Payton Manning for example always talking about wanting to see his kids, etc.) and then when an athlete says what she honestly feels, she gets ripped for it.

The responses on here are a perfect reason why most pros say nothing in interviews. I commend her for saying even knowing that she'll get ripped for it, particularly given the fact she's a woman.

Have to disagree. Unprofessional is exactly the takeaway I got from Goucher's interview. (That said, I was one of those incensed at Richard Sherman's rant a couple years back.) The bad energy in this sport is getting real old.

I agree but it's clear letsrun.com goaded her and it wasn't that hard

Gawd there are some bitter people on here.

Of course understandably gutted to have barely missed the team with what could very well be her last Olympic cycle. I feel like a lot of the flack she gets is underserved; despite being gutted about her showing, she immediately gave the other three props and made no excuses/immediately said that they were just better than her today. The part that really got me was when she was talking about how she hadn't been a factor for so long and felt like a rookie/was trying to stay in it and show what she had.

She deserves props for a stellar career, her '07 10k bronze was a huge run and was really one of the first big signs of a resurgence of US runners able to compete at the world stage. (Deer Kara Goucher) Good luck to her in the 10k.

During my interviews with Flanagan, another journalist said, "Are you going to ask him if he feels the USADA investigation is a thing of the past?" I said, "No I"m not. I don't feel like it's necessary. It's a great debut for Rupp. That can wait for another day."

Once I heard Goucher's comments (I didn't ask a single doping question in my first interview. I had stopped interviewing Goucher and was interviewing another athlete when I heard the topic come up and decided I'd better start recording), I decided I 100% was going to ask Rupp about it at the main press conference. If I didn't, then I wasn't doing my job and should just save thousands of bucks and watch it on television.

I just very matter of factly read off what she said and asked Rupp for his response, which he gave.

I don't know why people view any of this as awful for the sport. Manning just won the Super Bowl with HGH allegations. It's called life. Things are complicated.

Don't shoot the messenger. I didn't create this controversy. Salazar, Rupp, Magness, Goucher, etc did.

But crazy or not, it's worth saving this thread and looking back at it in a year. Do you really think she'd be talking like this if she didn't have reason to think that developments were NOT going to prove her right?

Sure, she's emotional, and in a fugue state. But don't confuse that presentation with "no justice on her side." I think the verdict is still out--although I was, of course, inspired by Rupp's run today.
