Have to say that with sub 4 happening so often it's a nice headline but lost some of its magic. Still amazing tho.

German 11-2-1990 18 years 3 months - 3:55 by himself start to finish!

Only low-aiming idiots think HS records are important. Tinman is building Hunter for the future, not for killing himself at a young age. Hunter has been following Tinman's advice and hasn't focused on times, just on training and on winning races (i.e. getting race experience). Great PRs have been a byproduct of that. In fact I'm a bit scared that he now says he wants to "run fast" in his last comps. This is the first test if he can keep his head cold while being successful. It's also a test for Tinman to stick to his methods and not get tempted by these irrelevant records. I hope Hunter doesn't break any more age records.

Don't forget, according to his coach Tom Schwartz, there are about 15 kids just like Andrew Hunter out there this year, waiting to receive proper coaching and run 3:58 as HSer's along with him. The future of the US 4 x 1500m at World Relays looks bright indeed!

Actually I think you're right! He shouldn't get pulled into the record game and risk injury or burnout. Where does a solid sub four high schooler go from here? Many who were the 'best' never broke that magic barrier in HS but went on to do other great things. You get that gift too early and it can consume your characters and then you end up being a Lets Run poster living in his mothers basement.

Every "body" is different and its threshold and tolerance for pain varies greatly from person to person and the kind of consistency it is exposed to. Having the tools is one thing - knowing how to use them effectively over the long haul is another.

Instead of complaining about newpsapers, I suggest you actually buy one. I still think newspapers will make a revival when they sell a foldable portable tablet so a tablet will be like a newspaper. There is nothing online that replicates how a newspaper is able to tell you what they think it important like a front page posting.

why does the culture of running knock talent so much? very few seem to want to admit they have talent, just that they are only working hard with "average talent". he's huge talent, coach should admit that.

Please, age is irrelevant once you become elite. What's this fascination with age, as though two months makes somebody a better runner. Only runners would criticize their top performers for such irrelevant BS.

Also, I would bet $100 that if you asked German if he would trade his HS "greatness" for being an elite pro successful racer, I'm pretty certain he would. HS performances may or may not predict future success, and there is certainly a long list of potential stars that never even became NCAA elites.

When Hunter dropped Fisher with a 54/55 last lap at Brooks last spring, those of us saying he was in low- 8:30 shape were dismissed by those who insisted that "the time only jeans the time if is' and he was only an 8:42 guy. Of course ventolin goes too far the other way, but often there is more to the performance than what the final time indicates. Hunted has been in sub-4 shape since last June at least.

I'll confess that I chided Tinman here for claiming Hunter would run 3:55. Now I'd say it's not crazy to think that Hunter could beat Webb's outdoor record.

Tinman, if you're reading this, I was wrong. He is almost certainly capable of running 3:55 this spring.

I understand why people thought it might be insane to prefict a 3:55 for Drew in the mile this spring. Truth is, not many highschooler's have come close to that performance level in America.

I believe in Drew, it is that simple. Furthermore, I believe that American middle distance and distance running could rise to a new level: for when a great runner inspires our youth to take up the sport, the depth and breath of top performances may expand...and that is a good denouement.

Belief in oneself is really a big deal when it comes to pursuing excellence. There's a lot of effort, time, and struggle involved as one goes after big goals. So ine must believe in themselves in order to stay the course.

Far too many if us lose faith in our ability - we give up when the struggles and challenges become reallt hard; we fall short of our personal potential. Instead, let us hold firmly to unwavering belief. (Just one more hill to run, one more snow or rain storm to overcome, or one more obstacle blocking our view of our goal ahead, and we will arrive.)

Let's look at the big picture now and recognize this is an opportunity for our sport to grow. Drew is making us believe!
