What's wrong with 10ks?
Most people want personal achievement. If you are a slow runner (and 99% of runners are SLOW), then the achievement is running far. Ultra running is a bit extreme, so they choose the most logical reachable goal, and that is a marathon. If you go from couch potato to running a 10k, no one gives a crap. Go from couch potato to marathon runner, and it's a bigger deal.
And, to be clear, this is a fine goal. Takes a while to properly train for a marathon, and they do it for fun, fitness, and camaraderie. When there are people who are members of the "Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle" who don silly attire and hold up a groundhog on Feb. 2 every year while reciting the worst poems every created by man, I will cheer on those who wish to push themselves physically. And, yes, even though it looks to you like they are barely faster than a walk, that is pretty much as fast as the vast majority of them can go.
Not everyone is a competitor. Some are there for the experience.
