Will LRC or Flotrack be at this race? I feel like a post-race interview might shed light on whether Chris Derrick is actually contemplating the marathon trials.

Half mile? About time. Hopefully all the over distance training pays off!
Galen might want to run the trials. If anything, he generates more discussion of the trials, which is good for the event. It is not a zero sum situation where there is a fixed amount of attention. Why would Derrick change his year/ career plans just to stick it to Galen Rupp? He may just want to get a good effort in. Or he could want to run the marathon trials. I doubt he would risk Injury and training plans to run a half marathon in Florida to get in Alberto's head. Would Galen not run a marathon or change his plans because of Derrick's presence. Isn't everyone basically trying to get into 2:10 shape?Do you have a basis for saying that Derrick does not like specific people? I do wish we knew more about what lots of runners are doing. It is a widespread problem that is hard to address.Basically, I think you are imagining things.

This is great. I think this is gamesmanship to its finest. Jerry's and Alberto's boys don't like each other. Alberto every 4 years takes the attention away from the marathoners by not revealing what Rupp is doing. Turnabout is fair play.
I think they should 100% mandate that people tell us, at least, a month out whether they intend to do the trials or not. You're either training for a marathon or you aren't. What's the point of secrecy? It's not like the other runners are going to change their training plans.

They don't owe their careers to us. Sponsors pay them to run fast and endorse their products. You don't pay them a dime. Therefore, they owe you nothing and don't care about your preferences.
A fine example of a narrow mind that is not capable of seeing a wider picture.

Exactly! Just because you enjoy watching something and will pay to watch, it doesn't mean the people you pay have any obligation to change their behavior to satisfy you. No one cares about what you want.
Which is why running is just a hobby sport. There is no strong governing body to tell the athletes how to act in a manner that is best for the entrie sport.
Why do you think sports like football and NASCAR have MANDATORY media events? It is so the fans can be engaged with the sport and grow interest. The athletes make big bucks because the fans PAY big bucks. That will not happen in running because of the mindset you and so many others have and that includes too many of the actual athletes themselves.
Think small, be small.

There only intention is to try to make Nike relevant in the Men's Marathon. With Ritz hurt and Abdicate clean, Nike will not have a Male Olympian in the marathon. This makes it important to create stories where none exists.
Count Ritz out if you want to, but it sounds like he's training just fine. He tweeted this earlier today in response to Jason Hartmann's birthday greeting:

@JasonRHartmann thanks buddy. For my bd present you can ride the bike for the long run with me tomorrow😊

(Potential) 'fans' DO PAY big bucks and they are already engaged and interested in (an aspect of) the sport. Practically every top 200 city in the US hosts a Marathon/ Half Marathon/ Marathon Relay/ 10K running celebration weekend. $150ish race entry, $100 per night hotel room, $150 Newtons, $100 Lulu shorts, blah, blah, and more. Plus the charity donation. These folk get to run their race, get their medal and brag at work about how hard it was. They can and do participate (alongside) the elite on the roads so there is no need for the hero worship like in football and NASCAR. In late summer every 4 years thereafter they can watch The Games and say "I did that."
Some sportscasters say MLB is no good because pitching is watered down because of league expansion. Maybe American marathoners are watered down because of the hobby-jogger expansion (not to be confused with the running boom of the 70's). Guys like Derrick can get money from a shoe company become "pro" and as a previous poster said "get in 2:10 shape" while everyone else in the world is running 5 or more minutes faster.
Would you rather watch the Cowboys from the upper deck inside the stadium or on the sidelines with the team? In (marathon) running you're with the team.
Sorry to burst your bubble, you're not entitled to have strangers do what you want just because you'd prefer it. If you want them to do something, pay for it.
If I enjoyed watching you do your job would you let me tell you how to do it? No. If their sponsors don't put it in their contracts, they're not obligated to do it. I wish athletes would communicate better and make it easier for fans to watch, but what I want doesn't matter.

If Chris runs sub 63 minutes then he will not run the trials. If he is in training for the trials he will run 64:30 and continue to train.
But the silly fan boys will think that something special is going on if he runs 61 minutes or faster.
