"Perhaps there should be a Craig Virgin Cross Country Camp on the Virgin Farm? Check the cellphones, attitudes and insecurities at the door. Be prepared to do farm chores and actually interact with other runners face-to-face. After a refreshing nights rest in solititude you will awaken to the sounds of Edvard Greig and roosters crowing; farm chores and a run -- then, of course, a hearty farm breakfast of bacon, eggs, home fries and toast. Life ain't nothing but a funny, funny riddle...[/quote]
Malmo, I have thought of that half jokingly.... but the farm has changed in the last decade as my parents have reached their '80's Much is different since you were last here. But, I came up with the idea of trying to host a 1 week X-C camp for H.S. runners in Illinois/St. Louis area that would go do scaled back sample workouts on the same sites as I utilized in either my early H.S. career or at the height of my int'l running career when I was based back in Lebanon from fall of '78 until Dec. of '84 and achieved my best accomplishments. We do have a college in Lebanon and they do have dorms/cafeteria/lecture halls as well as rec facilities. I thought it was doable if I could keep it affordable for all. But, for last 2 years that I have checked into it.... I could not get the commitment from the college to use the dorm buildings I wanted (200-500 person cap.) during the week or two window of time I wanted in late July or early August when it was the "no contact time" for coaches established by the IL & MO HS governing body...and I thought would be most attractive to both the athletes and the coaches. The college maint. dept. is thinly staffed and they want to be rehabbing the dorm rooms then for the student-athletes that would be reporting early just 2 weeks later. I have not found a way around this impediment. But, I still like the concept and this thread only reinforces that the idea that teaching this kind of simplified but effective training concepts has merit.
