The expression is "grasping at straws," and pointing out Coe's obvious conflict of interest is not grasping at straws.

When the IAAF sponsorship contract comes up for renewal, Coe will have an obvious conflict of interest with Nike, a potential sponsor, that will prevent him from ethically having any involvement with a major sponsorship contract.

For comparison, in 2011, Diack was sanctioned by the IOC for receiving cash payments of 52,880 Swiss francs, supposedly as a "gift" from a "friend" Jean-Marie Weber, an executive of ISL, a marketing firm then negotiating for a contract with the IAAF:

Coe will be in exactly the same position with regard to Nike in 2019.

Coe works with the same people to get Nike to be the IAAF sponsor and his new Nike salary is raised by lets say 100k to 200k (maybe even more) per year. Nike is free to pay Coe whatever they want in his contract and it won't be illegal. Instead of back door deals he does it in front of everybody in the light of day.

I think what would happen is that Coe would supposedly recuse himself from the decision to on who should get the next IAAF sponsorship contract. That is insufficient for two reasons: 1st, what good is Coe to the IAAF if he can't participate in major decisions like this if he is conflicted out? and 2nd, supposedly not participating in the decision does not eliminate all of the kinds of subtle influence that could be at work whether Coe formally decides on the contract or not.

Take a second to think of the power that Diack had when it came to ruling the 23 member panel. Pretend nobody knew about his bribes and accepting of cash in return for his support of awarding championships. Diack was able to convince all members to unanimously vote for Eugene and support a no bid process. He was able to get them to support Qatar for 2019, which puts World's into late October with still horrible conditions and a country that will have a hard time getting people to travel their to watch the games in person. Now if he was willing to share some of his wealth in return for Votes the entire group is corrupt and they all knew that unethical practices were taking place and didn't care.

The only way to remove blantant bribery in your face in Coe's position is to stop the Nike endorsement. I don't know if you saw this, but Coe has an assigned parking spot at the Nike Headquarters. If he travels into the area enough to warrant a parking spot he is certainly having a lot of meetings with them. The end result surely doesn't create an unbiased president in charge of the IAAF.

Eugene gets awarded the Championships through 2024 and then hires Masback.

Seigel gets a Nike contract through 2040 and then his race teams becomes sponsored by Nike.

Nike is the company that demands a lot from their men in power and promises huge payback in return. No way in hell can Coe keep this endorsement and still stay as President. It gives Nike a puppet with strings to pull on in every meeting for every decision that gets made in our sport.

It's not a matter of if. It's a matter of when. The sport runs on money.

The how could be more elegant than a straight $10,000 in a voting member's pocket. The voting member could have pet projects that get Diack's/IAAF financial support. Really, the sky is the limit.

Qatar is no problem at the right price. Women's rights? No problem. Homosexuality a crime? No problem. Very difficult environmental conditions? No problem. Just pay the right price. This is an IOC theme.
