Maybe Wisconsin wasn't tempoing the Louisville race? Maybe that was their best.

The same thing happened last year, with everybody going from 4:55 at 6k pace to 4:10-4:15 pace all of a sudden for the last 2k. The consensus was that the last 2k is short.

Considering Schrobilgen was 5th and McDonald was 10th, safe to say those two guys were holding back in Louisville.

But right now the Badgers don't appear to be as good as we expected them to be.

Joe Hardy was going backwards the second half of the race after being up front early. Carl Hirsch was nearly in last at 3k really struggling. Never counted a full 7.

Yeah, Ryen runs relatively low mileage (40-45) for collegiate women so perhaps that last 1K got to her today.

Stanford, while not fool strength, obviously was way down there - 19 places worse than predicted. Princeton was 15 spots worse than expected, Ole Miss and Iowa State 13.

The truth about the Wisconsin "jogging" claims in Louisville is that they were very misleading. Schrobilgen and McDonald (and perhaps their next 2) certainly held back, but Byrne didn't shut them all down until later in the race. In fact, their 5th man fell off of their pack early and their top 4 were yelling at him (someone named Tyson?) to catch up and McDonald even started to peel off the pack to help him work back up. Once he fell off, and realizing that Michigan and Iona were going to beat them handily, Byrne instructed the rest of the guys to ease up and they were passed by a number of athletes. It was actually a smart move because it made it look like Wisco's loss to the other competitive teams was simply due to a lack of an all out effort, protecting them from scrutiny before hopefully regrouping at Wisco.

Having said that, this is still a tremendously coached, tremendously talented team. Joe Hardy is much better than his finish today. And Wisconsin was criticized last year around this time before rallying to win Big Ten's and make it through their region with ease.
