DougC,
I agree. I had respect for johnston until that post. Good thread though.

La Woof:
Point taken. Jag 1 is actually well-intentioned amateur. This isn't meant as a personal attack. She (and you and the other minimalists) are trying to help people to avoid injury and run faster. That's respectable. But the data you are citing do not tell us how safe shoes with no midsoles are for running. Nor do they tell us the extent to which individuals vary in their tolerances. A "one-flat-fits-all" approach, to use Baker's excellent phase, may well end up sowing the seeds for injury in the same people you want to help, and that's more than unfortunate.
Look my point isn't to offend well-intentioned posters. Nor am I pretending to be an expert -- I am not -- and my review of the literature extends to what I've read here and can access from holiday Internet. But I can read a scientific article, and I can differentiate it from journalistic article. I can understand the claims the real experts are actually making, what they know, where they are speculating, and what they say remains to be understood. And it is clear the jury is still out, particularly on the all-important issue of stress FX.
JY's comments are the most helpful so far in my view. He points out that we already know there is significant variation among individuals in their anatomy. We cannot therefore rule out that there are different thresholds. This may explain why some people never take up flats or run barefoot most of the time. Perhaps you, Trackhead, Jag 1, and Huffman are anatomically blessed. Perhaps my threshold sits at around 80 miles... Some poor sod out there may be facing injury at 20 miles, and may even benefit from orthotics, counters, and the rest (because of anatomical anomalies). Who knows?
But we all agree that some running in flats is probably beneficial for most, and that all transitions should be slow and careful, and that we should listen to our bodies.
wishing you a merry x-mas & attempting to resist talking about this anymore, i remain,

Well said johnston. Different methods for different people as well as everyone should be doing some running in flats and if making the transition be smart about it.
Don't overcomplicate things, I really think its a simple process. Moderation and what works for you.

There are lots of individual qualities to be taken into consideration. I've got a more or less average foot with a minor level of pronation, and it's rare that an average shoe doesn't fit me. Up until a few weeks ago, I had run almost exclusively in the Tiger Paws for a year -- before I ran in flats, I'd get 400-500 miles out of a 2080 or Kayano.
Now I do all my road running in the H Streets and all my off-road running in the NB 240, and will start running in the Maxcat Street soon.
LaWoof, for example, has foot that does not fit shoes well. His foot is shaped like a 12.0 but the length of his toes make it a 13.0 in many cases, and most of the time his shoes just don't fit him well at all and he ends up sliding off the platform.
I've been talking with my podiatrist friend lately and he has been reaffirming all my sayings about the negative impacts of high heeled shoes.
The transition is very very gradual, and for some the challenge is finding something that works and working into it. Barefoot running, I think, is one of the best ways to get your feet back in shape. Forgiving surface, no shoes = no problem with fit.
Take it slowly and the bigger the drop the more time to transition. It took me 2.5mos to go from the 2080 to the Tiger Paws, and another 4 mos of just running in the TPaws before I was ready for the H Streets.
why you all up in my ear?:
go f*** yourself
johnston.
