Jamaica is skewed by a few big stars. Take away Bolt and SAFP and their medal count plummets, esp gold. Probably 5 less golds.
JUst because your pop is 20x of Jamaica does not mean you have 20 undiscovered Bolts.
Considering that most of the best athletes in the US play basketball, football, baseball, soccer, tennis, etc it is entirely possible that we have 20 undiscovered "Bolts" busy excelling in other sports, though unlikely. I would say we definitely have some.
Did you see the story of Earl Manigault? The 6'1" basketball player who could touch the top of the backboard and two hand dunk from the free through line in the 1950's. What could he have done in the high jump or long jump or maybe even the sprints? We'll never know. He wouldn't do track events.
How many phenomenal athletes do we see in other sports that look like they could excel in track and field?
In Jamaica, Kenya, and Ethiopia running is the national sport so the best athletes will be identified and they will stick with it. Not so in the US. Comparing the populations of the countries is an interesting stat but it doesn't tell the whole story.
