It's likely she was wearing cotton socks, that softened her feet, then the hot track tore them up when barefoot.

If you don't train barefoot, your feet won't develop the calluses needed. Zola ran barefoot all her life. Also, nobody has yet mentioned Abebe Bikila, who won the Rome Oly marathon barefoot.

It is a bit embarrassing, but am I the only one that finds the pic mildly arousing? I will admit to having a foot fetish and the bottoms of feet don't really do it as much as the toes, etc.

It's the socks. Trying to race in socks on a track will do this to your feet because the sock sticks to the track while your foot rubs against the inside of the sock, every step.

If she was barefoot inside the spikes, her feet would be in much better shape. Anyway, props for toughing it out and not letting it affect her final.

Her foot clearly got chewed up and she didn't make a big deal about it and just went out and made the team. Your feet are tougher, at least in your mind, I get that. (Back in my day...) So what?

It doesn't seem strange to me! I was on a run once, and bet the guys I was with if we went to a track I could run a 2:05 800 or something. I decided to run barefoot instead of in my running shoes. I could feel the skin shifting around after about 200m, and by 400m I knew I was getting horrible blisters. When I finished I sat down and looked at my feet, and there was blood EVERYWHERE; it looked like my feet had exploded! My friends ran home and got a car to pick me up.

I know I lost the bet by a lot. I think I ran like 2:10, 61/69. The worst part was that we'd climbed about an eight foot chain link to get into the track, and then I had to climb it back out with my feet all torn up.

How long do you suppose that'll take to heal up? A good 3-4 weeks, I would think. Lose a lot of fitness in that time span

Maybe this has been covered, but why did she lose her shoe? She ought to have them so tight that a heel clip from a trailing runner wouldn't pull them off. I have to peel my foot out of my spikes after a race.

I wasn't doing speed work or anything, so that's different; but I think I was back running comfortably again within a few days.

I'd keep putting powdered sulfur on the wounds, and they would heal quite quickly. The main thing is to stop wearing cotton socks. Nylon is much better.
