That's having him improve more from JR-SR year than SO to JR year, and he'd pretty much have to find a fast enough 2 mile to enter

Verzbicas got his at Pre Classic, but considering next year is an Olympic year, Pre Classic most likely won't do a 2 mile, so where would he do it at? Lukas got a world class field to pull him to a great time, basically an optimal opportunity, the odds of Hunter getting that are slim...

He might get Cheserek's indoor 2 mile record though, which is 8:39, I could see that, maybe Millrose will have a 2 mile, I just don't see Hunter doing it in HS only competition

If Hunter wins Foot Locker next year in a solid time, runs in the 8:30's for 2 miles, and goes sub 4 (while winning) the dream mile, I would place him higher than Fisher. With these high school races, you kind of have to place more weight on time because there's no true way to gauge the quality of wins. So in my opinion, Fisher's first Foot Locker was over a weak-ish field in which the top 3 were all juniors and a lot of talent had gone to NXN. Also his first Dream Mile victory was a weak-ish field with a lot of new up and comers and juniors. But Hunter this year has had to race Maton, Fisher, Dressel, Brannigan, Ostberg and a bunch of other guys who established themselves last year as juniors. The senior class of 2014 was somewhat poor and the #1 stud (Blake Haney) didn't do a whole lot after Arcadia. The 2015 senior class was much better and Hunter took plenty of losses.

Yeah, Rupp ran 29:09.56 one week after his 5k record.

Also, Lindgren ran a pretty crazy 10k at his HS peak:

That 60 second lap in the middle did the job of breaking the Soviets, but also hurt him as well (just less). 14:07 for the first three miles, coming back with a 15:10 to close isn't exactly ideal splits.

As you can read on that site, he ran 29:02 to win the Olympic Trials over Billy Miles that September (which is too late to be credited to his high school resume, but was that same season for him).

Yes, Chapa's 10k time is rather ridiculous.

I know what he was doing last summer leading up to XC. Not 100% how much it changes for track, but it is very stamina based.

Built Summer miles to around 65mpw by August with 1 long run in the 85min range.

Generally 1 workout a week through summer starting with 5 x 1000 and building to 8 x 1000 as a "CV" workout.

Did add a hill session towards end of summer.

. You'll find a good deal of info from his coach (mom). Basically it's a lot of training in the MP to 8k pace zone. Moderate mileage, lots of strides and relaxed neuro-muscular training. Race pace training is typically tacked on right after strength training. An example from his coach:

"A typical mid to late season workout might be 4-5x1000 at cv followed by two sets of 400-300-200 with the 400 at mile pace, the 300 at 800 pace, and the 200 quick but relaxed."

"CV" pace is just slightly faster than 10k pace.

It's the moderation and consistency philosophy that Tinman preached for years here at lrc. Nothing to impress your Facebook friends with. Only good enough to become a champion.

14:07 for 3 miles is 14:37 for 5k.

Thus the splits were 14:37 and 14:40.

Don't forget about John Trautman. He ran 8:05 at the Penn Relays back in 1986 in flats. I think he won by about 20 seconds. Unfortunately, he got mono right after that and his season ended.

Yes, that's why I said "could fall." Probably won't, but "could." While Verzbicas is often belittled or called an "age cheat" or "not an American" on this forum, there's no questioning his greatness as a high schooler. No one ever won two Footlockers while making it look so easy. But it's not outrageous to suggest that Hunter "could"--possibly--get below 8:30 IF all the pieces fall together right for him. When you can outkick Fisher--and some commentators say that last lap was 54--while running an 8:42 two-mile, you have all the tools. Remember, much of Fisher's greatness came from being very, very fortunate to be totally healthy and--does anyone know different--injury-free for two years.
