Thanks for reminding me, I'd forgotten some Brits were caught... You've shattered my illusion of our drug free culture, I might just cry.

All the Brits are clean, eh? Are you sure? Check with:
Gary Cadogan, Dwain Chambers, Linford Christie, Mark Richardson, Carl Meyerscough, Doug Walker, Janine Whitlock.
Joking aside, a major difference seems to be these guys were caught without winning a host of high profile medals - I don't count Europeans and Commonwealth as high profile (Christie and Chambers obvious exceptions). Your guys seem to be caught a few years down the line - a positive is that they finally are being caught, but just how many have slipped under the net? I'd like to think very few, but the US doping laws have been lax for years. Admittedly, ours aren't perfect either.
Just to add fuel to an already burning fire... Who were coaching Chambers and Meyerscough when they were caught??
Someone listed a whole bunch of european cyclists - I don't think cycling has a high enough profile over here in the UK at the moment, it is on the up though. I guess in a round about way I'm suggesting Millar may not have done it had he not been with a continental team? I'm certainly not excusing his actions, he made the decisions and should be made to face the consequences.
On a slight tangent, I'm in favour of life bans for athletes caught doping. They are knowingly trying to cheat the system and essentially defraud others. A slap on the wrist and 'see you in two to four years just isn't enough.
Have written far more than I intended to, and will almost certainly read it back and think wtf was I getting at. Treat it at face value, the musings of a random brit who fully admits he doesn't know the whole story.
If you're suggesting that Myerscough only tested positive once he got to the US, you're wrong. He tested positive in about May of 99 (?), and didn't start at Nebraska until January the following year. And Chambers coach wasn't American either (although he was based over there)
Merely playing devils advocate and highlighting the US links.

44 flat and 19.9 is extraordinary, MJ's times are laughable. I am American, our guys doped and everyone else did too. I don't see why everyone has to defend their countrymen's cheaters to the death.
MJ's 43.18 and 19.32 are extraordinary, but his record times have long been surpassed and his 200/400 range has been bettered by at least three athletes.
Bolt 19.19; Blake 19.26; Bolt 19.31; Lyles 19.31
WVN 43.03
WVN sub-10, sub-20, 43.03; Norman sub-9.8s; 19.8s; 43.4; Kerley 9.76; 19.7; 43.7
Let's also not forget Rudisha, who ran 1:40.9 and 45.2
MJ doesn't look so freakish now.
MJ clean? That's a good one.

One thing not mentioned in this thread is Johnson's unique running style. Perhaps this, coupled with talent and hard work helped push him.
Agreed! His upright duck like running style was repeatedly made fun of but studies showed it was actually an incredibly efficient style of running compared to most other athletes. I believe that's why although he couldn't break 10 seconds in the 100 he was capable of maintaining a close to top speed for much longer. Hence his 400m world record. As for the 200m he hit his peak speed at a later point than most other sprinters which is why his average speed was 9.66 per 100m

Did I say he was clean?
...This thread is 17 years old. How did you even find it?
Are we really this hard up to talk drugs/dopers we are back to Michael Johnson, hell how about Jesse Owens, Bob Hayes, Tommie Smith, Lee Evans, was Bob Beamon a doper?
Does it realLy matter at this stage of things?
Hell, why not just go with all sprinters are dopers so we do have a level playing field. I like it.
