Exactly what I was talking about...
As an older adult in this chat room and one who is also familiar with both parties ( coaches and mom) , I will only say that Jumping Jack Flash has it mostly right. And for the other parties who speak of the Travis Newman problem several years ago, one has to go no further than to look at the same exact problem.
I will bet all of my silver that he wasn't kicked off the team for merely doing jumping jacks in a peculiar fashion while the team warmed up together.
This school has had major problems in the last 10 years a combination of ambitious coaches and ambitious athletes. They have more high-profile departures (Maton, Neuman, and Coach Dave Clark), more stress fractures (ALyssa Occonor, Hannah G. , Piper Macdonald) and more parties (half of the 2013 state team).
The McClatchies demand a lot and as a result their athletes alternately win state titles or fall by the side of the road.
Their 2012 girls championship team, that includes Maton's sister, went 1-2-3-4-6 at state but has almost given up running entirely.
The Summit program has not produced long term success.

I had always wondered what happened to Travis. So the Summit coaches are just overly controlling?
I mean with a talent like Travis or Matthew as a coach you have to be salivating, but at the same time you probably want them to be like robots and do everything how you say then forget they're people and then overreact.
You didn\'t speculate, though. You said something false and tried to pass it off as fact (Maton still runs for Summit).

This sounds like tit was written by a "close friend of the family". There are two sides to every story and we don't have the coaches side here. Just this. In doing a little, in town, unbiased investigation, I can only say that this, almost unreadable snippet, is so full of inaccuracies it is laughable.
Local paper says he's welcome back on the team at any point he chooses.
I guess he will have to follow the Summit HS guidelines not Oregon's before being allowed to compete.
Yea it sounds like there is some drama that both sides are responsible for. To be honest I would be ticked off if I were Nike and made this awesome race (BorderClash) and then these three twitter friends who think they are way too cool for everyone just turn it into a joke and don't even try. On top of that they created even more drama with the Dressel sprint to the finish ordeal. That's not what Nike or the fans were hoping for.
At the same time, if Maton isn't the first runner to leave the team like this, maybe there's more to the story about the coaches.
Maton and whoever is coaching him are doing a good job; his achievements speak for themselves. But between Maton, his mom, his head track coach, and his distance coaches, there is a lot of really unfortunate drama that is ruining the beauty of a good distance runner. They're missing the point of running.
Running coaches can be insufferable jackasses.
But really who kicks a 4:03/sub-9 guy off the team for something so trivial? I'd let that kid get away with anything but 1st degree murder!
