Webb won US titles, Diamond League races, was an Olympian, an American record holder in multiple events, US leader in lots of events, and yet "a couple NCAA titles and contending for the US 1500 as a pro" won't happen for Grant if he trains that hard.
What could you be basing that comment on?[/quote]
I totally agree with NOP Skeptic.
To Cooptastic: Webb, was physically far more developed than Fisher in their respective senior years. Webb, had been trained much harder than Fisher while in HS. Fisher decided to solely focus on cross country and track this year (his senior year). Prior to his senior year he juggled year-round soccer and running and studies. Lets remember he is going to Stanford. The study component of his HS years must have been equally as strenuous as his athletics. Webb may have already had the notion of going pro in his teens. If so, that may explain the intensity to his HS and limited college duration. Fisher reportedly trains 40 to 50 miles per week and hasn't been subjected to much, if any, taxing speed work. His coach has already mentioned these next points: his mileage and intensity and recovery aspects of his training will increase this year. Maybe we just witnessed such in his race at NB National Indoors. But clearly he doesn't have the training background, physical development, and coaching that enables or wants to push for such an effort. Seems to me that Fisher is surrounded by smart people that have a balanced approach based on who he is, where he has come from and developing (or under developing him) for success in the future.
Seems to me the kid has come along just fine without the need to push the envelop for risk of burn-out or injury etc. Listening to his interviews the kid is incredibly well put together, thoughtful, and happy. When the lofty expectations are thrown at him he very maturely and politely diminishes them - he runs for himself and loves what he is doing. As a fan of track and the amazing young talent we have in the USA, let's not over train them to chase stratospheric records.
