none of those collegians that he beat in hs can touch him now and that's the only relevant fact. he's beaten lalang, who has beaten rupp, he has run 3:36 in a college race, he beat kennedy and lawi at ncaa xc as a freshman, and he closed a 10k in 24.8. I can see him beating Rupp in a variety of different race situations, particularly a slow sit and kick. And remember that just as he has risen dramatically in quality in training at Oregon, Kenyan NCAA runners very often get a lot faster soon after turning professional as well. (Rupp in college form certainly couldn't have touched Cheserek). Some examples are Sambu, now a sub 27 guy, Kipyego, a 14:30s runner now after being beaten by Americans in college, and Betsy Saina, who was beatable in college.

So Ches beats a handful of 13:20 / 28:30 guys and that means he's ready to take down a 3:50i / 12:58 / 26:44 olympic silver medalist who routinely closes 10Ks in 52 seconds?

I disagree with the original poster. Cheserek cannot compete with Galen now. In a few years, maybe. Galen as a sophomore vs cheserek as a sophomore, ed wins for sure. As others have already pointed out, he looks like a worldbeater because he is racing against NCAA athletes.

Why do so many people on this site have such nasty things to say about Oregon? I don't understand the wild accusations about doping schemes. Oregon is a top tier program at the moment but it hasn't always been that way. Before Vin came in 2005 the program looked pretty average for about 20 years. Hell, Smith was fired because of it. When Vin was coaching Stanford during their dominant years no one was making accusations of cheating. So why all the hate for Oregon?

Btw, the Nike Oregon project is a seperate entity. It is more fair to criticise NOP that the UofO, as Al Sal is using everything he legally can to give his runners the advantage. But please understand that Alberto 's only connection to the school was as a runner in the 80s, and then as Galen's coach. He does like to pick up some of the athletes as they turn pro but who wouldn't? Oregon has churned some studs over the last decdecade.

Kenny Moore, as big an Oregon fanboy that there has ever been, cites numerous examples of Bowerman's cheating. It is ingrained in the culture there. I'm sure that Salazar was a massive jerk before he ever went there, but his years at evil school turned him into a world class sleaze ball.

Yeah, I Googled for "centro sauce," and the only website that turned up was Letsrun messageboard posts (a grand total of three threads including this one).

Yeah, Ches would beat Rupp if Rupp had to run with 10lb dumbells in his hands....it remains to be seen to what extent Ches will improve in the next few years. Also can't say whether he would be a successful full-time, year-round pro.

The best thing for Ches is to get pushed, and to do that he needs to be racing people a lot faster than he is. Not sure he's going to do that while at Oregon.
