13.1 Stickers on cars

when training for my 1st HM last year & hitting weekly mileage totals i thought i'd never touch, i always thought it would be funny to make a sticker that reads something like:

M T W Th F S Sun

10 4/12 10 5/12 10/5 6 20

would probably get some "WTF?" looks.

Im pretty sure .8 is not equivalent to 800 meters interms of miles. and since when did the 1.5 mile race become really big?

I don't usually agree with Flagpole (in fact, I rarely do) but I agree with this post.The problem isn't that they are slow. If Ryan Hall had these stickers all over his car I'd think it was just as foolish. The problem is the mentality that you somehow need to share these "accomplishments" with everyone else.

This is the exact type of post that makes me mad at "The Johnsons" (Yes, sirs, I am writing directly to you) for allowing this kind of deplorable attitude to continue. This site is "Let's Run". It does not stipulate athletic qualification, nor does it purport to have a requirement. Right, Johnsons??? Invariably, I am sure this post will be reported, and I am sure that the fragile ego of the collective soul of this room will be devastated. However, it's true. Runners under 13 and over 60 years of age can do whatever the hell they want. They get a free pass.

For both genders, the widely accepted rule of thumb would be 1.5(the world record) at the given event.

The reality is they are of no real concern to me, as a runner that is faster, although it is annoying to hear many of them exclaim they have run a marathon, when in actuality they have have only run a half-marathon. However, my main gripe with Hobby Joggers or Parade Runners is that they enter races. The resources of any city are finite and basic supply and demand dictates the more demand, the more you charge. So if they (the "I run for health" hobby joggers) are indeed in it for health reasons, why are they entering competitions if they have no intentions to compete? It just serves to drive prices up! If you aren't gonna race a race, just stay home. One can jog for free on any street.

I don't care if people want to walk/jog a half-marathon in 3 hours. I don't really care that most road races are filled with chubby people who are simply there to "participate" rather than compete. It's better than sitting around watching TV. It's people being active and social. Fine by me.

But for the life of me I do not understand why people feel the need to put these damn stickers on their cars. Why does the person behind you at a stoplight need to know that you ran a certain number of miles at some point in your life?

I also don't understand why people post their running-app results on Facebook. "Oh, such-and-such just did 2.7 miles at an average pace of 10:56? GOOD TO KNOW!!!"

By definition, you could JOG a 3 hour 4 minute marathon but your pacing would have to be incredibly good so as not to run a few of those miles.

I guess it's all relative, but unless you are world class, you can't jog a 3-hour marathon, even a 4-hour marathon is considered running in my book, albeit slow.

Actually, without them, there would be far fewer races. Now I will agree that to the extent they seem to require big finisher medals and other useless stuff, there is some added expense but all things considered, it's the masses that are paying most of the bills for races, not the 2-3% that consider themselves "competitive".
