The times are much worse than Europe yet White Argentines can't produce what Italians and Spaniards due in their native homelands. The well must be a foot deeper there. Soccer is the worlds game not egg ball as Europeans call football. When you talk about guys like Deon Sanders and Bo Jackson you are talking about guys that produced times that were domestic class level sprinters or national class for weaker countries. Soccer has plenty of players that can produce domestic level times in the middle distances. You just have to watch these guys run.

Borzov won in 72' and he would have broken 20 seconds in the 200 if he was pressed at the line. East Germany had the world number one 100 man in 81'. nah, Europe is mostly a cold continent with not very many roads/trails conducive to running. The few that enter athletics are at the top in the world...just look at Rutherford, Bondarenko, and Bosse.

True, many are lost to futbol, but very fast, athletic Europeans are lost to sports like team handball, hockey, speed skating, cycling, cross country skiing, you name it..

Also, in the US, there's really not that much real athletic talent lost to football, and basketball. A lot of overweight, clumsy-looking, or gangly folk yes, but not real athletes.

The only athlete basketball grabs is potential high jumpers and maybe a few long jumpers. Vince Carter once jumped over a 7 footer(sort of).

Notice Black Jamaicans who are largely Jamaican in origin can barely run sub 10. Jamaica has about 6 guys who can do it every year since they developed a designer PED and got the drug fueled victory parties started in 08'. I agree though with your diversity - your blacks are foremost in football, basketball and athletics - whereas your whites are totally paramount at winning Nobel Prizes for Physics, Chemistry and Medicine.

in pro sports like soccer it´s widely accepted that rich clubs buy the best players, win the cup and their supporters feel great, though the discussion keeps going on that this is just a matter of money and not a real triumph.

we know the story of stephen cherono/saif saeed shaheen. how many people consider him as a qatar hero? what would most people think about kenyan runners competing for russia, hardly speaking any russian, but collecting medals for russia? how long does it take, before this would be accepted?

the real problem is: in the western society athletics is in a crisis in general. the upcoming generation realizes: it´s not that popular any more, it´s not that well-paid like tennis or soccer and it´s a risk to be focussed just on athletics and nothing else (like a good education, a good job...) to lead a happy life, especially when the prime of life is over.

the russian athletics head would like to bridge the gulf.

#2 As far as Russian men, running is so low on the desirability scale that most likely there are 100 times more Jamaican men approaching it seriously.

I think your focus is too narrow. I think you are just looking at the pros, but what about the high school basketball player who will never step foot on a college basketball court but could have been good at another sport?

Or even the good HS player who is small, plays small college ball but could have been better at another sport?

I meant world class. At the high school level offensive lineman that make the NFL play basketball.
