Do elites wear trail running shoes for xc?
Spikes don't clog up as much as the spike has less to stick too.

Looking at the world champs and Edinburgh, there are definitely quite a few pros who use actual XC spikes.
Best solution is to carry multiple pairs with you and change shoes as the conditions dictate.
