Why would someone who is quitting running bother to post about it on a running forum?

Ten years from now your Thursday dreamscape will be emoting about Crossfit guy instead of soccer guy, or whatever the fashionable fitness twist is at the time.

Based on the story itself, why would the coach want such a wimp on the team anyway? Kicking water bottles instead of kicking ass, that's attractive to the women too. You don't deserve the team.

Summer is barely half over.

I give this 1/10. It started out well enough, but when you got to the 'punting Gatorade bottles across the field' bit it just became too obvious.

Less is more in trolling.

Might as well have added that you took a quick look behind you at 3k and saw that the 2 soccer players were passing the ball back and forth. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading it. Very funny.

What training did you do over the summer? Also, what surface was the time trial on, as there is a big difference between cement or asphalt and grass or dirt.

a very obvious troll, but one that kept me reading right up to the end. I like how you counted down every 10m as you valiantly struggled to hold off the soccer guys.

your over the top reaction at the end gave it away. Here, let me write you an alternative ending.

"Breaking 17 for the first time was of no consolation to me as the cold reality of my situation washed over me. The rest of the team milled around, comparing results and slapping each others backs in ribald camaraderie. I walked slowly, away from the noise and the chatter of happier souls. I had failed. After months of training I had failed. I gazed out over the startling beauty of the Louisiana Bayou. A gator swam lazily upstream in search of prey. No tears came, nor did I scream or rage into the gathering dusk. I could not give voice to the depths of my despair."

In the event you are not a troll, a couple of thoughts:

1. You know soccer players do run a lot? They are fit to run competitive times in track & XC.

2. If the 8th guy on the team is sub-17:00 on a July time trial, you'll have a hell of team for regional and state meets. Probably will run well at a regional NXN. Whether your are 8th man or 5th man, enjoy the ride. It beats being on a crappy team that has runners that don't care.

3. Run and keep on improving. If you can drop your time down even further, you'll probably still be able to run D3 in college.
