He read the thread and that is his response. Believe it or not most runners back in the day didn't dwell on their training, or endlessly chase their tails over discussions about it. Training was an active, not a passive endeavor. You either trained, or you were ATNA (all talk no action). You ran, then once your sweat dried, you moved on to the rest of the day.

Here was my response to him "The only reason you ran 121 miles that week was because your Buick Skylark was on blocks after we changed your oil, and we couldn't figure out how to put it back together!"

If he says more I'll let you know.

i'd hazard a guess that posted week was rounded up for even numbers and was one of the biggest weeks he did in hs.

that being said, you have to assume those guys were flirting with 100mpw regularly. and why not? a lot of juniors and seniors in HS can handle that sort of mileage, such as the sub 4:30 1600 guys who have been running consistently since freshman season, but they are likely to be done running for good their senior year of HS or maybe as late as soph in college. the body can only take it so long, BUT it can take it.

Anyways, they were doing lots of hard miles, that is for sure.

Not necessarily. Maybe Chapa got up to the lofty 130-140s for a few weeks. Or more. Or less. The whole point of apocryphal accounts is to make the unbelievable believable.

Heck I even ran 151 miles per week in high school. Read that: 151 miles per week (singular, one week, not plural, two or more).

I get it that is what he said, but folks want to know what the three did in HS. Maybe Carey didn't record or doesnt remember, but that doesn't change the fact that people would like to know.

If you didn't hav e anything to offer, why did you respond other to let us know that you know Carey?

I have coached HS for 30 years ... I have coached very successful HS runners... that schedule is not realistic. You can believe in legends ... I'd like to exist in reality.

Again, I will say ... THINK. That program is crushing. Those three guys were very, very, VERY good runners, but they were not beyond the physical limitations of the human system.

While this is interesting to ponder and question, it's really not that important. Unless you for some stupid reason plan on following their training plan, what they supposedly did to train years ago isn't really what matters. What matters is that they were fast, very fast, and dedicated runners

Their 4th guy (Roper) was actually 31st at state - really solid 4th man. But 5th was waaay back in 84th. Hammond's 5th and 7th guys ended up finishing 25th and 28th the next year, so they certainly improved a lot.

Bonham was their 7th guy Chapa's junior year (Pinkowski's senior year) and finished at the back of the meet but moved up to 28th his senior year. Based on that I'd definitely believe he was at least a 9:30 guy.

Exactly!! Not the 90-120 miles per week but TIME. The secret to success is the time spent on the road. Time spent running. That has always been the secret. As you said, that is more 'than many care to give'.

not a particularly relevant post but true. Not a high mileage or even really a particularly high intensity program

With the thorough research and thoughtfulness of the OP, I'm not surprised this thread has had endurance.
