Spare me because I do not understand the economic side of this. But why can't we allow the immigrants to enter? Process them all as citizens so they start paying taxes. If they are caught without citizenship or at least not in the process of getting it we deport them. Wouldn't it help contribute to economic growth? My first guess to someone's argument against this is that we already have too many people here and we need some control. Or that if we allow all immigration, we would be overrun in droves.
It's a good question. You have to realize, that things are pretty bad in Mexico and other central american countries right now, and if there were a truly open border, we would be dealing with a large number of families crossing into border states. That means our public services (schools, health services, transportation, etc.), would have to deal with an immediate and long-standing increase in demanded services in those areas.
Also, it strikes me funny that we are a nation currently debating raising the minimum wage, but also favor a massive influx of cheap labor from our bordering nations. Do you think that those kids who come here by the thousands, many of whom will need to learn english as a second language, are going to be ready for college or management positions in a company over the next ten years? I genuinely hope that some of them are able to beat the odds, but they are more likely to compete for entry level positions in a nation that increasingly struggles with unemployment. Good luck with that minimum wage hike.
A real plan for controlled immigration, over a long period of time, is a much better scenario. You cannot control that immigration process and the infrastructure demands that come with it, without borders. Just my opinion...
