Don't see what y'all are objecting to. He's not saying "I'm going to run 2:08." he said "it's not out of reach." He's right, it's not. It's just unlikely. But big breakthroughs do happen.
THIS. we had 9 guys 1:02 or better at Houston in January (not including Vail)...wouldn't you think if properly trained for the marathon, at least a couple of them couldn't go 1:05-1:05 and break 2:10???what is wrong with American marathon training/coaching? why doesn't this happen? could Renato get these guys to sub-2:10?

They should take a page from the ladies like Desi and train for the marathon, not the half marathon. We won't know if Matt is a true marathoner either until he actually runs one. Until then it's all talk.

It's 61 high. There's a world of difference between 61 high and 60 flat. I used to run with Matt Llano, and he's good, but he's not THAT good, yet. I'd peg him at 2:12 if we're being realistic. That's the thing with debuts, though. You never know how good someone is until they do something big, so I'm not going to put it out of the realm of possibility. I just don't think it's going to happen.

No, just gave Desi as an example. When I say "ladies", it seems there's a lot more ladies (not from the Hanson's group) who are much stronger in the marathon than the HM, vs. men.
For someone with a 1:01 HM PR, 2:08 is a realistic goal as a lifetime best, not a debut.

. Each one gets faster and faster with its equivalent performances so its safe to say he is much better at longer distances. Its actually pretty crazy that none of the times break the pattern, see for yourself, as his 5k goes from 14:00 to a predicted 13:21.
Now obviously this isn't entirely accurate and even with the half marathon time the site predicts a 2:10 full but I think he definitely has the ability, just maybe not for his debut

A true marathoner, aerobic monster with a 1:01 half could possibly do 2:08, probably 2:09.
A marathon underperformer like certain former US record holders would struggle to go near this.
At least, we can say that a NORMAL Marathon runner must be able to run at a speed around 95% of his PB in HM, if his training is correct (and, of course, if he has some specific talent, especially mental, for the distance).
This means this kind of equivalence, with good training (without trying to challenge Ventolin...) :

2:06:00 with 59:50
2:07:00 with 60:20
2:08:00 with 60:50
2:09:00 with 61:18
2:10:00 with 61:45

Who is not able to stay inside these parameters, or follows a wrong system of training, or is not physycally and mentally talented for long distances.

If you re-read his interviews and all the articles, he said the AR marathon debut is a dream come true goal, he realizes that is highly unlikely. His realistic goal is 2:12 or 2:10. Big difference. THE GUY IS NOT GOING AROUND TOTING 'I WANT TO RUN SUB-2:08 OR I WILL RUN BELOW 2:08. Bottom line, support the guy and cheer for him, don't hate and bash from the couch.
