You may be new to the sport, but, typically, records in distance races in this era are set using "pacemakers". It's a fairly normal occurrence in Diamond League races.
You may remember a few years ago when Chris Solinsky broke the American Record in the 10000m (NOT a Diamond League race, but a record attempt), there were pacemakers through about 7000m. At that point Rupp led - on American Record pace - until Solinsky took the lead with 800m left.
Solinsky got the record, and it wasn't disrespectful or cowardly in any way; it simply is the way fast races are run.

The A should be the goal. The are big races with better runners coming later. Fans are getting wrapped up with Hayward Field--Rupp's home turf--, and thinking that ARs must be set an U.S. dirt.
has the A standard for the 2015 worlds been set yet? if it is like recent years it should be 27:40-27:45, which is a hard tempo run for rupp.
if the A standard for 2015 is set, anyone know what it is? thank you.

I do t expect a record attempt. I expect a race like Payton Jordan but a little faster.
The criticism of Rupp doesn't make sense to me. Most records involve pacers. Ask Daniel Komen and Kenenisa Bekele. Also, years ago Rupp was criticized for not being able to finish. For example, he lost NCAA cross one year when he tried to break away and then was out kicked. Now he kicks well in all but the fastest races.

Rupp ran 27:31 in 2007?, early collegiate season. He looked like he was on a workout or tempo run in that race until 800 to go. As a college freshman he ran 28:15, running about 13:55 solo for the last half.
I'm pretty sure Rupp, on a tempo (which indicates even pacing) could now go through 27:40 and go a few more laps on pace.
As to the guy who compared leading an 800 to leading 10,000 meters in a record attempt, seriously?

Rupp's 10k PR is a little better than 26:50, so a 27:40 is 50 seconds over 10k PR pace, which is to say about 3% slower. 3% over 10k PR pace would typically be in the ballpark of "tempo" if we're defining tempo as AT pace or roughly what a runner can sustain for 1 hour, which is to say half marathon pace for an elite like Rupp. Looking at it from the half marathon perspective, maybe 28:00 - 28:30 for 10k is a fairer estimate of Rupp's tempo pace, but 27:40 isn't way off.
Conversely, 30 for 10k [approx 63:15 for a half marathon] is way too slow to be called tempo for a guy like Rupp.

Some points:
- Rupp usually brings his A game to Hayward Field. His 12:58.90 was at the Pre Classic. He want to college there, his family and friends will be there..this is his home meet.
- Good to see Bedan Karoki in it - he is not afraid to push the pace.
- What time is 9:30pm Pacific in Kenya? That plays a big role in how runners perform here. Rieti and Doha are a lot closer to the homeland and we all know how the Kenyans love those tracks.
- Forget about PRs and look at which runners have a tendency to push the pace? That can tell you how likely this will be a fast race. Imagine Tadesse-clone int he race...would def. be a hard run race.

Put it in perspective. Just because 27:40 is fast for some, it's controlled for others. In the sense that Rupp could put on road flats, get on the track by himself and run evenly 27:40 and likely continue, I'd say it's a tempo for him.
Remember when he did the 30-40 surging workout and went 6 miles in under 28:00 (under target pace)? That was 6 years ago going 30-40 every 200m. Saying he can tempo 6.2 evenly in 27:40, now, is not a stretch.
Can you just give up on the troll? Considering a 27:40 a tempo run for ANYONE is absurd
