For others, the Olympic gold wasn't an end in and of itself, but an opening to better things. Because there wasn't much money in the sport, winning a medal was a great way to find work. And a lot of Olympians went into sales work afterwards. I think Billy Mills sold insurance for a while after he won gold.

Others like Ryun had their religion as a bedrock, and he's said his faith helped him decide to retire and pursue other things.

Others like Ron Clarke get into politics. Many coach.

The ones who have trouble lacked this fallback. Danielson didn't burn out, so much as he was forced out by the economics of being a runner, and the necessity of taking care of a family.

In Lindgren's case, running was his thing, it was his identity, and I think things would've been a lot different for him if he hadn't gotten drafted into the army, which cost him a teaching position he had secured. After that he struggled with health problems and worked jobs well beneath his intellect so he could have time to continue to train as a runner, with diminishing returns as he grew older. Running was his life, and when he couldn't run like he used to, I think it was a bit like losing his identity.

I think the takeaway from this is that elites and aspiring elites need guidance in terms of a balanced life. There needs to be an emphasis on having multiple passions, to remind them that even if they do everything right, eventually their talent will fade, and they'll have to find something else to pursue.

I think runners of the LR/serious kind self-select for depression, for which their running is medication. Our need to run stems from certain deficits, which we feel but can't always articulate. This is why Once a Runner is wildly popular. Parker gets it. Hobby joggers/mudders are happier than we are, but they lead unexamined lives. We figure things out during our many hours on the road. But things can go haywire if we are under or overtrained. Compulsiveness doesn't capture this; that is merely descriptive of our weird personal habits.

I wonder how many of us find our love for running helps mentally without realizing it? I know whenever I get injured and cannot run for a bit I get depressed very quickly. Perhaps I gravitated towards running as it helped balance me out..

Even with life guidance, running at a high level is not sustainable, unless it is your profession. I think we all know the OCD runners who put in tons of miles who don't have much of a life outside of it. It's impossible to run at a high level for life and have a balanced life. Plus, when all of your spare time revolves around running, it's hard to connect to everyday people, since most don't run. This only serves to make runners feel even more isolated. They spend their runs alone, and even sometimes when socializing they can feel alone.

Running attracts addicts (runner's high), people with anxiety, people with self-image issues (eating disorders), workaholics, braggarts, and people who need quantifiable validation. They measure themselves in mileage, times, and nearly all will never turn a dime at running. It's a bit of a sad sport in that sense. I've seen 40 year old runners have the most awkward small talk conversations with each other at local races, because they don't have running friends or even family to join or watch them race.

Also, peak running ability does NOT correspond with peak health. That is intuitively obvious.

Peak running ability does NOT correspond with peak mental ability. That should also be intuitively obvious. High mileage is a drain. There is a mileage point at which running serves your mind, and a point at which your mind serves running.

The sad truth is that hobbyjoggers are the most balanced runners. They get anxious about trying to finish a 5K. I get anxious about missing a run. Which is a more healthy response?

not a bad post, although peak running ability not corresponding to either peak health or peak mental ability is not something with which I agree, unless you are talking about absurdly high mileage

for mid-d and sprints it's different.

IMO that depends on the status of the hobbyjogger. If he is well off but is obese / extremely out of shape, it probably would be better to be the latter, as long as you're able to let minor things go.

Because one missed long run isn't going to make you from 2nd to 1st in most runners anyway.... more likely from 21st to 20th.

Are you guys aware of the fact that Danielson was already charged in the murder of his third wife Ming Qi in 2006? However, he pled not guilty... The current case puts a whole new complexion on the murder of Ming Qi now too.

Oh, and competitive sports can drive you mad. Yes! Still, it doesn't necessarily make you someone who is capable of taking a person's life.

Her name is kathy ormsby, a collegiate record holder who ran badly in big races at nc state. Paralyzed herself with the jump. 1986/indianapolis I believe.

Well, THAT is what I was driving at... Seems lika a logical consequence of his more recent murder. I'm not from the States, so I haven't been following the news of his conviction. I just read up about him and was puzzled by the fact that he didn't plea guilty in 2011. That's it.
