Q: What is the point of a national championship?
A: To determine who the best runners are in the sport and take our best team to worlds (ideally).
Q: Why do rules exist?
A: To ensure that we are able to accomplish #1 by enforcing rules that maintain the integrity of the race such that the best runners win and we send our best athletes to worlds.
Am I wrong on that? Are we enforcing rules because we want the race to be fair, in that we want the most talented athletes who have worked the hardest and are in the best shape to win or qualify for worlds? Or are we punishing for the sake of punishing? Or are we just trying to maintain proper race ettiquette and ideal politeness and questions like "who is the best runner?" are ancillary? Are we rules and taking things from athletes because they were a little rough in a way that had no impact whatsoever on the outcome of the race?
Disgraceful day for USATF.
The first two groups unfortunately are growing old and can't see straight. Look around USATF, there not growing any younger. They could not see how that runner just ran over everyone.

She ran right into her. Completely unnecessarily and unabated on an uncrowded section of track.
It could (perhaps should) have been an on the spot dq in my opinion.
If she were passing a lapped runner could she just have her way with them with no consequence? It running, not rollerderby or ski cross.
I agree that Grunewald deserved to be DQ'd. I thought that both after watching it live on tv and then after watching it again just now. Yes, she would have won regardless. But the fact that she would have won regardless, and the Nike versus Brooks stuff people are writing here, are irrelevant. She blatantly smashed right into Hasay from behind and then continued to push around her as Hasay stumbled and slowed because of the hit, which deserves a DQ no matter what, especially when it happens on the final lap. It is indeed a shame that the best athlete in that race won't go to worlds. But that's her fault, not Hasay's, Nike's, or USATF's.

Salazar finally really messed up. He revealed the true corruption of Nike in track and field. If letsrun didn't exist this would just fade away but now we can do something about this. Nike is going to have their hands full with this if we keep it a relevant issue.
THE BEST RUNNER WON THE RACE. She could have fallen down with 400 to go and still gotten up and won. Protest for Gab! Poor girl has had to get through cancer TWICE!! She achieves her dream and then some scumbag pesters and pulls strings until he gets his way. How can Hasay even accept this worlds spot as if she deserves it? She knows she got flat out beat. No one was beating Gab today.
A runner who simply puts her head down and does the work and gets through a horrible illness two separate times, battling her way all the way to US champs and winning in stunning fashion, gets it taken away by a girl who has every advantage a runner could have and her brat of a coach. Absolutely sickening.

You are missing the point SO COMPLETELY that I almost think you a trolling on Nike's behalf.
The POINT, since you are missing it, isn't whether or not Grunewald's actions warranted a DQ. That is a matter of rules, and interpretation of rules.
The POINT is that certain athletes/coaches have access to different influence over that interpretation, and therefore are PLAYING BY A DIFFERENT SET OF RULES than their competition.

The issue here is the blatant corporate strongarming from Nike.
