What constitutes an "athletic person"... standards?

I'm an All-American in the 1500m but I doubt I can finish a marathon without walking. Guess I'm not an athletic person :(

Here's a well-conceived argument;

Dumb thread. It would have been better to simply ask the masses what they feel constitutes or defines an athlete rather than throw out some arbitrary criterior as a standard.

So if a runner can only run a 5:31 mile but can still do all the other qualifications of the op then he's not an athlete?

Is there an epidemic of incorrect athletic labeling? I can do all of those except the vertical jump but to be fair I've never practiced it or trained for it. Most people would say the same of a marathon. Can't really see the point of trying to define things this way, but I agree that anyone who can do all of these is a pretty good athlete.

If your point is really that some pro athletes are not athletic, I agree. Table tennis champions are in better shape than many baseball players.

bench is way too easy, I do body weight for sets of 8. 5:30 mile is also a bit too fast but I guess this is a running forum so what do you expect.

If you walk with your toes pointed outward, even a little bit, you're un-athletic.

If you want to make marathon requirement on par with 100m and Mile, it should be 3:00 for men and 3:30 for women.

Does some sort of endurance training nearly every day.

I have high standards for calling someone athletic ...granted I played 4 sports in HS, ran xc/track in college. There were at least 3 of my own friends from my HS class that meet all these standards.

SPEED - sub 12 100 , sub 55(hs girls run these times)

ENDURANCE -sub 5:00 and sub 18 5k

(maybe a little fast maybe just one of these)

STRENGTH -Push-up 50x, pull up 10+, BP at least 200 or 10-15xBWt

POWER -Vertical 30in+ at least touch the rim,or high jump your HT.

COORDINATION/BALANCE- be able to do at least one skate/surf/snowboard/ski

(ride around the block, paddle in drop down and stay up, ride down the mountain with at least not falling down.

MULTI SPORT SKILLS - be able to play bball, baseball, football ,volleyball, or hockey without looking like a beginner(someone who at least start on a HS team)

Crossfitters and triathletes.

That's true. Way more people can bench their own body weight than run 5:30.

For the sake of argument, an athlete is a person who can garner clapping in his/her respective sport. It's relative.

Almost touch rim, but 3" short of that, at 5'10". What are you nuts, not many can high jump their height! That would be all conference from where I came from--and all they had to do to qualify for state was 6'. I did long jump my age through high school.

Decent skater, life long skier and at peak able to handle any slope in the Rockies, sometimes with style.

Like a 5'10" high jump - that is a high standard, depending on the type of school. Played B team, bball in middle school but cut in high school. At a small school I could have been an okay DB or WR in football, but at our large school would have been 2nd - 3rd string, maybe specialty team. Probably could have been an all conf wrestler, or at least a starter for a mid-low weight class (hated wrestling and never tried out).

How good was your HS and how big was it? Ditto for your college.

My high school had three guys play on the University of Michigan basketball team, one scholarship starter on the MSU football team (the fastest guy in MI for the 100m his year), and our "crappy" cross country team was still all state in D-1. My college (UM) also has obviously a lot of olympians that have played for school.

You gotta compare apples to apples man.

You yourself may be very athletic, but just playing four sports and running in college doesn't mean you are fast. A colleague of mine ran at a TINY college and was a 19 or 20 minute 5K guy.

In the four years I was at this HS we had three guys out of those classes play for the UM basketball team. Not good enough to make the MSU team, but whatever. :)

Other guys played D1 college sports like soccer and swimming but I don't remember where they all went.

The point was just that a high school is not a high school is not a high school. Ditto with "D1" colleges.

Running in college to me = placing in a race for points in a heat or scoring (1-5)for your team at least. Even that may be a low standard.

In general I think most people are one-two dimensional from sport specific training. I am a jack of all master of none.
