Flaherty has more of a background in the shorter distances and has significantly more marathon-specific training and has only run 1:08:17 / 2:22:53. I would say Bitter would be lucky to go under 2:25 if he dedicates a year or so to marathon training.

When I run Phoenix, with its 850' of net downhill, I'll make sure to point out that the downhill sped me up by 1:51 while ignoring the facts that the altitude slowed me down by 30 seconds more than that, and that the coning of the course into one lane while certifying the distance using the tightest tangents of the roads cost another minute. Despite the fact that a 2:40 at Phoenix is actually worth about a 2:38:30 at Chicago or Berlin, I'll make sure to point out that I'm only really in the ballpark of 3:20-3:25 shape. YOLO!

Another point I wanted to make related to why I don't think anyone currently running can go faster than 11:00... If a Kenyan could show up to the starting line of a 100 miler properly peaked for a 100 mile run and simultaneously in 2:03 fitness, he absolutely could run in the ballpark of 10:30. The catch is that training properly for a 100 miler is going to make it physiologically impossible to show up in 2:03 shape. I think the best that anyone could show up in, if actually ready for the full 100, would be ~2:10. This drops the capability to ~11:00.

Oh, and I just noticed that Zach actually ran another 2:31 in January. The only catch was that it was intended as, in his words, a "speed session" with "little need to spend lots of time recovering from the race" (ie, a workout), run off of a couple weeks of training after taking time off after JFK, and was completed on a non-banked indoor track with tight corners, with no relevant competition, and while having to nearly continuously lap the 99 other competitors in the race over and over.

Since the marathon is too short for them, they're busy training to become the first to break 4:06 for the double marathon.

More proof of how these ultra-running records are MEGA-soft. I regularly do hour long runs 15 seconds/mile faster with my d3 team- and that's in the off season.

This is just stunt running. No sereous runners should even participate in this trash.

Kawauchi's first ultramarathon didn't go so well. His finishing time the next year was much slower than Josh Cox's 50k times.

If he doesn't make it to the starting line healthy in the spring, I wouldn't be surprised if he just decided to take up longer races.

Sunada was a pretty good marathoner 2:10:07 in Berlin. But he was still 6 mins 40 seconds or 5.5% slower than Kipsang.
If Kipsang was 5.5% faster than Sunada at 100 km, that would be about 5:50/mile pace for 62% of the distance of 100 miles. If you extrapolate, 6:10 - 6:20 would not be impossible.

3:34:14 is the 50k World record for WALKING. Sunada RAN 100k in 6:13 These ultra-marathoners are a joke at the present time.

Sorry, missed this before. Sunada ran 2:10:07 off of ultra focused training, so when he showed up to the starting line for the 100km, he was probably in no worse than 2:11-2:12 shape. Kipsang can run 2:03, but if he focused on absolutely maximizing his ability at 100km or 100 miles, he would probably look more like 2:10 ability when he showed up at the start of the 100km or 100 mile. If Kipsang could, in fact, show up maxed out for a 100 in 2:03 shape, I would agree that 6:10-6:20 wouldn't be impossible, but that's like asking David Rudisha to show up to a run his absolute best in a 3k without sacrificing the ability to run 1:40.91 on that same day if he had to do so.

Why are wee talking about marathon runners coming up? Who cares? This is like comparing Bolt to a 5k guy. Elite marathoners are balancing an incredibly fragile power weight ratio. This ratio is going to be different for 100 mile runners. Also, fueling? Gut tolerance? All this matters when running 100 miles! You don't just go out and run and worry about nothing else like you do in shorter distances. People, also don't understand that at lower paces digestion happens differently. Nobody knows how any specific elite marathoner's gut might respond to fueling for 100 miles at a pace near or around 6 minutes per mile. If they cant fuel they sure won't hold pace at the end of the race.

Of course it is not the same as Bolt moving up to 5k. 26.2 miles or 100 miles still use the same energy systems. Sprinters and 5k runners are completely different.

I love whenever someone has a bit of success a bunch of jealous has beens, or never weres in most cases, come on here and immediately start discrediting the person. It doesn't matter if someone who will never run a 100 mile race could beat his time, because they will never try it. This would be like people saying Babe Ruth sucked, because he wouldn't compare to the current MLB players. If you are so jealous of the acknowledgement ultra runners get when they have a good race just don't follow the sport.

Most see ultra running as pointless... One thing I don't understand why ultras have so many "National Championships." (50k, 100k, 50-mile trail, 50-mile road, etc... Just so diluted. Wish they would pool the prize money and promote one quality event.

In all fairness, 50 miles vs 100 miles vs 24 hours are very different events and road vs trail is very different. For example, Max King would have a great shot at a win on a 50 mile road championship, but very little chance in a mountainous 100 mile trail race. I do think 50k championships should be done away with though.
