345 in a race for time is different than 345 in a championship race with rounds. His PR is 341 so is it disappointing that he only ran 345 at USAs? No, He beat guys who have pb's 10-15 seconds faster than him.

You are so right. His PR is 3:41, so in 2008 he ran 3:45.07, then hit a PR of 3:41, then ran in a slow race and finished 3:45.85. This is not a surprise. He ran his heart out and cried his heart out. The remainder of the field is much faster. Can he run 10-15 seconds faster? Who knows. Time will tell. Great story, it just isn't surprising. He has been running for a long time, he isn't a new-comer to the sport. Keep running Matt.

Matt is 27. He'll be 28 this fall.

Matt teaches in a combined K-3rd classroom. His students primarily live at a home for children who have had to be removed from their families.

Presbyterian College for his undergrad, then Winthrop University for graduate school - both in South Carolina.

WTF are you even talking about? You act like people's bodies don't mature. lots of runners get better as they age.

This, and everything else you have written on this thread, only proves that you could never amount to what Matthew Elliot has turned out to be. He obviously believes anything is possible (and has set about accomplishing those dreams) and all you've proved here is that you're too scared to think big. And by extension, you put him down because he has the balls to think big.

This guy is awesome. He's like your typical LRer that's actually made it.

Well except he has a great attitude,doesn't appear to hate his fellow man, and doesnt suffer from "small geek runner syndrome".

I'm a cynice but good god! You cant even enjoy or appreciate the fact that this guy made a huge achievment in the sport, the sport he loves!

At 28 he has a short window , sometimes being the right place at the right time can pay itself forward , it has for Matt. Not much racing left for him in the US this summer , he would have to run b-meets in Europe at his own expense.

Regardless of whether he had the potential or not, how many times on this board do we look at HS kids with a 4:42 mile and tell them they are trash and won't amount to anything?

Hell, according to Milesplit there were 7,977 HS boys this year who ran a 4:41 1600 or faster in the entire country. I would have to imagine it was a similar number when Matt was in HS and now he is better than all but 3 of then.

Poor training in HS or not, Matt's story is the kind that should be embraced by the sport.

Can't you:

A) be inspired by Matt, or

B) just not give a poop and not post negative?

The fact that you feel compelled to anonymosly call a guy who can beat your butt (not just in running, he's a big guy!) a p***y, just screams that you have issues.

What motivates you to be a jerk?
