He gives his time, and he is concerned about the issues he supports. Afraid to read the posts? Afraid you might be disabused of some of your ignorant stereotypes?
A steady stream of cars — lined up a dozen deep at one point — came by AmericanAirlines Arena to drop off supplies for the victims of earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
Inside, in the quiet of a hallway between the basketball court and the Heat locker room Tuesday morning, Dwyane Wade, away from the microphones and the TV cameras and the news releases and the spotlight, spoke of the devastation and the horror.
"What struck me most was the same thing, probably, that struck everybody the hardest, because it looked like so many people lost everything they had," Wade said.
He stopped for a moment and repeated a word with unmistakable and abundant resolve.
"Everything," Wade said. "And then you think, 'How many of them had so little to lose in the first place?' "
It was that biting unfairness and Wade's own sense of humanity that led him and retired Heat teammate Alonzo Mourning to co-found The Athletes' Relief Fund for Haiti, which was expected to go past $1 million in pledges by Wednesday. Wade's own donation was a game check worth approximately $175,000.
Wade spent hours watching television reports from Haiti last Thursday while in Houston during a long Heat road trip.
"I don't think I ever changed the channel from CNN," Wade said. "It was hard to watch, and I understand why some people say they can't or don't want to look at what's going on, but everybody who can do something should do something.
"It's about helping people who don't have a way to help themselves. I've always believed that if you're in the best position to help, you have the most responsibility to do it."
This is the place where cynics among us roll their eyes and scoff at such efforts of an athlete as nothing more than a grab for attention. This is the place where cynics figure any wealthy athlete's benevolence is a mere gesture draped in the self-serving desire of a tax write-off.
Wade doesn't care what cynics might think as long as they write a check or donate food or clothing.
"Give something," he challenged. "Do something to show you care."
The NBA, NFL, Major League Baseball and the NHL have responded to the crushing needs in Haiti. So, too, have teams and various individuals on those teams. College coaches have sponsored fund-raising efforts.
Wade, though, reserves his deepest respect for Mourning.
"Nobody can question Zo's heart or dedication," Wade had said earlier during a group interview.
Mourning spent a day-and-half in Haiti last week working at an improvised hospital/shelter in the all-but-unrecognizable capital city of Port-au-Prince. He hung IV lines and ran whatever errand was necessary. He had called the scene "the most devastating, deplorable images" of his life and an "inhumane atmosphere."
But he returned to Haiti for the day Tuesday, and said, through a Heat spokesman, "We are working fast as humanly possible to raise funds and collect items like tents, air-conditioning units and generators to help ease some of the strains of the injured who are suffering. There is still an enormous need."
The response by athletes and their employers to the Haiti tragedy casts sport in its best light.
Miami Herald columnist Linda Robertson got it exactly right the other day when she wrote, "Criticize (athletes) for their lifestyles of luxury and excess — the jewelry, the cars, the mansions ... but give them credit for their generosity."
The Heat play a home game Tuesday night, by the way, against Indiana. No matter how many points Wade scores, it wouldn't be his best work of the day. Not even close.
