" 7AM: WAKE UP — I’ll have a black coffee and some porridge or toast for breakfast with Rhianna.
8.30AM: TRAINING — every day is different. I usually have training sessions with my coach three or four times a week.
Other times it’s just running at the Nike centre with my friends, like American runner Galen Rupp. I also go to the gym twice a week to do weights for an hour or so.
There are days when you’re tired, particularly if you’ve had a long session the previous day, but you have to keep going because that’s part of the job.
You think about what you’ve achieved and what you need to do.
10.15AM: HEAD HOME FOR A SHOWER.
11AM: HAVE A SNACK — I might have a PowerBar (a nutrition bar) for a snack. Sometimes I’ll have a quick nap.
1.30PM: LUNCH — I’ll usually have a tuna sandwich or chicken. It’s mainly protein and some carbs.
(insert Theodore's Notes: Hint, SUBWAY TUNA SANDWICH!)
I sometimes have meetings around lunchtime too. For example I see a sports psychologist twice a week. I have a sports massage three times a week as well.
2.30PM: UNWIND — resting, eating and sleeping are so important. At the moment, I like playing FIFA 2012 in my downtime.
3.30PM: PLAY WITH RHIANNA AND HELP WITH HER HOMEWORK — it’s really important to me to spend time with Rhianna. Life isn’t all about running, it’s about my family as well. "

6.45PM: DINNER — my wife is a great cook. She makes healthy meals, such as chicken or fish, potatoes and vegetables, or pasta. I don’t have to eat a certain number of calories a day but I do need to eat a healthy diet and I need a lot of protein and carbohydrates because I’m running a lot of miles every day.
...
9.30-10PM: BEDTIME — if I’m hungry, I might have a bowl of cereal before I go to bed. Definitely no alcohol though. I tend to get eight or nine hours’ sleep a night and I notice the difference big time if I get less than that.

There's also a bottle of orange soda. I doubt it's Mo and Galen who are drinking it. The Subway is probably not theirs either.
I don't see how a Subway sandwich provides enough calories or nutritional value to help an athlete recover after hard training.

nowhere in that caption does it say Mo and Galen are eating subway. The subway in that picture is prob for Al Sal and another coach. Mo and Galen would never run the times they do if they ate things like subway. They certainly only eat things from whole foods, and maybe occasionally trader joes. Most likely after this picture Mo and Galen left to go home and eat injera and grass fed ostrich meat their wives made.
Go*damn, you imbeciles. I made it as easy for you as I could in the original post. I even pulled this quote - "As they cool down from interval training, he leaves to buy their sandwiches." - from the article so you didn't have to click on the link.
The article - NOT THE SERIES OF PICS - clearly states that Salazar leaves to buy their sandwiches as they are cooling down. Then, in the last pic of the set, as they are dressing to leave, there sits a whole GO*DAMN BAG OF SUBWAY SANDWICHES. Yeah, Al Sal is eating four 6-inch Subways all by himself. Do you people have rocks for brains?
I was a professional runner as recently as 2009. Nutrition does matter some, but it's certainly not something I spent a lot of time thinking about. Getting in the good food is much more important than avoiding the bad food. I ate a lot of junk, but I always made sure I ate good food too. I was running high mileage so one of the most important things for me was getting in enough good fat. I would eat avocado and nuts every day. Some days I would even eat a whole avocado in one sitting. I also ate cookies just about every day and ice cream in the summer. I hardly ever drank alcohol. Hope this helps.
Since you gave such a reasonable and well informed reply (not being sarcastic), can you share your opinion on the thyroid meds issue?
I don't have much to say about the thyroid "issue" as you call it. I was tested once, but my levels were fine, I was just over-trained. Everyone on it says it just gets you back to normal. Everyone not on it wonders. That's just how it is. Personally I think it's a bit of a placebo. I think people see a couple of good runners on it and think it does something then they seek out a shady doctor to try it out. Kind of dumb though because once you go down that road, you on it for life.

Sounds like you just didn't go to a "good enough" doctor. One that "knows athletes" and treats "borderline" hypothyroidism a bit more "aggressively."

You are an idiot if you think nutrition is last on the list.
Food FUELS YOU. It is an energy source.
Drills and weights over nutrition? You are delusional.
Nutrition plays a part in your mental state, physical state, your weight, how you sleep, basically EVERYTHING.
I think what he means is a normal persons diet is usually fine for most runners. Yeah anyone who eats McDonalds every meal will suck but if you just eat a normal diet you'll be fine. You do not need to think about everything you eat just maybe some of the really bad things. I would agree that its near the bottom of the list of thing you need to focus on because you do concentrate on it without any thought.
Reminds me of a boxing forum I frequent where it was revealed several very fit, very ripped pro boxers were eating at McDonalds 4 times a week. Except there was really none of the dismay that we see here with pros eating Subway. Never underestimate a runners neuroses! All the worrying you guys do about what you eat is pry ten times worse for you than the little bit of nitrate in Subway meat or HFCS in the bread.
BTW, fruit has nitrates too. And most bread has sugar or honey added. Jesus.
tyson gay liked his junk food also. http://articles.latimes.com/2008/jun/24/sports/sp-tyson24

So that's why I've been running so poorly!
runners are notorious for so called junk food diets, bill rodgers with his pizza dipped in mayonnaise, and eating a box of chocolate chip cookies as a snack, prefontaine was said to like his beer, alan webb likes mcdonalds, salazar likes pizza and beer, many more examples not surprising rupp and farah do also.
note subway is supposedly healthy compared to other fast foods, at least that is how it is marketed.

Prefontaine was known for massive salads...along with the beer.

HOW FRAGILE ARE THESE GUYS?
More importantly, how many championship medals do they have?
I wouldn't be surprised if the whole photo shoot, right down to the Subway food, was all a ploy.
They don't eat Subway bread but in the evening, disguised as cops, they go to Dunkin' Donuts.
