Kramer vs Kramer was quite ordinary but it shows how times have changed. The notion that an adult male would want to spend time with his son was considered a radical concept in the late 1970s.

People have mentioned Rocky and Forrest Gump, not so much as bad movies as undeserving ones. 1976 and 1994 were pretty great years -- Rocky beat out All The President's Men and Network, while Forrest Gump (good movie, but epic boomer nostalgia put it over the top) surpassed Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption. Tough competition.

I may be young, but you all have crappy taste in movies. American Beauty was a good movie, and Crash wasn't bad at all. the worst Oscar winning movie I have seen is The Hurt Locker. It was so inaccurate to real life, and so boring that I got close to turning it off. Chicago kinda sucks too.

Forrest Gump was good...but I think the general consensus 10+ years later is that Shawshank Redemption is a much, much better film and should have won that year.

Heinlein was totally about the military industrial complex. Starship Troopers is pro-military and also anti communist. The movie goes in the opposite direction, though. It is a satire.

Definitely was not blown away by Crash, but enjoyed American Beauty more than a lot of the board.

I think I'm the first to mention Slumdog Millionaire. Weak competition that year, but still.

Couldn't agree more but was very surprised to see this lead the thread and to see how many people agree.

One of the reasons it surprises me is that so many people were/are taken in by "Million Dollar Baby", which no one has yet mentioned,and which was written by the same guy (Haggis). MDB is, to my taste, just as hateful and mean-spirited as "Crash" but manages to pass itself off as an uplifting "sports movie."

I was also underwhelmed by Crash, but I really dislike Amadeus. Maybe because it is so dated, it comes across so cheesy. Plus I can't stand the acting.

And for a serious throwback, Grand Hotel(1932) was basically a film with many major big name actors from the era (Garbo, Barrymores, Joan Crawford, and Wallace Beery). Really simple and nothing spectacular. I've seen better movies from early after the silent era.

Amadeus was awesome. Can't figure how you could call it dated...maybe because it was set in the 18th century?

Actually, the fact that no one has even mentioned "How Green Was My Valley", winner over "Citizen Kane" (overrated, but still) and "The Maltese Falcon", is proof enough that it's the one we're looking for. No one even remembers it.
