1+5=12, 2+10=24, 3+15=36, then 5+25=?

Don't know how I came up with that solution instead of simply doubling the sum.

I agree with 60, but it jumped out to me as sort of base 7 math...

7*1 + 5 = 12

7*2 + 10 = 24

7*3 + 15 = 36

7*5 + 25 = 60

Yup, given that we choose Y to be 5X, which the original puzzle specifies. Let Y = 5X and substitute and you end out with the same two equations.

I got 72 also. I did it a different way, which may amount to the same thing.

I decided that the answers (12, 24, 36) were some kind of weird base 4 where the first digit is multiplied by 4 and the second digit is multiplied by 1, even though in true base 4 you can't have digits like 4 or 6 or 7.

So "12" or "one two" is (1 x 4) + (2 x 1) = 6 = 1 + 5

"24" or "two four" is (2 x 4) + (4 x 1) = 12 = 2 + 10

"36" or "three six" is (3 x 4) + (6 x 1) = 18 = 3 + 15

So "72" or "seven two" is (7 x 4) + (2 x 1) = 30 = 5 + 25

The answer is 510.. There is a pattern that no one else has noticed... It is more obvious if written like this:

1 + 5 = 1 2

2 + 10 = 2 4

3 + 15 = 3 6

.....

5 + 25 = 5 10

The left column goes "1,2,3...5"

To the right of that it goes "5,10,15...25"

To the right of the equal sign it goes "1,2,3...5"

And on the right it goes "2,4,6...10"

You can't just add multiplication where you want to, which is why the answer is not 60. But you can follow patterns. This pattern show a that the answer is 510!

why do people ask questions like this? really its either just asking to find a sequence (which many can be found) or just simple addition... why not ask real questions that while somewhat have an answer really don't like Grandi's series (1-1+1-1+1+1-1+... =1/2 ) or how string theory physicists are using 1+2+3+4+5+6...=-1/12 and are attempting to sum divergent series

I'm not a math whiz, but just looking at patterns I say 60:

1 + 5 = 12

2 + 10 = 24

3 + 15 = 36

4 + 20 = 48

5 + 25 = 60

The first column increases by 1

The second column increases by 5

The third column increases by 12

This is interesting.. can anyone explain why this happens?
