I certainly agree that a healthy/typical human body is very at detoxifying itself and in general the stuff about toxins/detox diets is quackery. That being said, being a little precautionary by limiting processed food is certainly a wise decision. Most of the GRAS food additives, if they've been tested, were tested for safety in isolation (i.e. not combined with other toxins, which would be more realistic to what a person experiences over a lifetime). I've seen estimates that Americans eat ~8 pounds of additives per year.
Re sports drink: The cheapest, and probably the best, thing to do is water down some sort of juice and add a pink of salt. You can find recipes online to get the proportions right. I just get whatever juice is on sale. My favorite is to use cherry juice.
