I usually go to Heartbreak Hill for my hill workouts. Hard to believe there is a more difficult hill in the world of running.

Never been to Mt. Washington, have you?
that bridge at the end of gate river run has to be the worst in elite running. you hit that thing running sub 5-445 pace and are halted with either wind or hot concrete for a mile up

The up Comrades Marathon in South Africa must get a mention if for climbing hill while going uphill..
The hill that kills everyone...is Polly shortts...if you've ever read, "Duel in the Sun" Alberto Salazar's sotry of the Comrades run is awesome...even though I can't stand him haha
heartbreak isn't even the worst hill at Boston
He did state that one criteria is "what had happened there historically".
Heartbreak might not have phased many of you but it's hard to argue the historical significance it's planned in numerous races. This seems to be what makes it number 1.

That's a good point. I came up on this hill in 1997 thinking I was in good shape but when I finished my nipples were bleeding, I was walking, and a race volunteer was asking me if I could finish. To top it off, I had a rather voluminous shart on the Newton hill.
Sooooo...no one has named a hill in an elite race that beats it. All of these hills in no name races are tougher - no doubt. But they fail the criteria posed by the original thread premise.

Easy. Mount Washington has one hill that is much more demanding.
my two cents...
Boston and NYCM are the most elite races with a significant hill in terms of depth of field, appearance fees, and prize money.
Has any one heard of the Bix race?
Starts straight up a hill at about 9% grade for half a mile. Add some July Iowa heat and you got the most demanding Elite race.
My friend and training partner traveled back east to run the Boston Marathon.
He was running through the last part of the race and asked the guy next to him when they'd come to heartbreak hill. The fellow looked at him in surprised and said they had already passed it.
My friend thought he was kidding and said the hill was a joke. We ran much bigger hills all the time in our training.
I'm sure it is. But there are no elite races on Mt. Washington.

There\'s a famous track ...
I think you meant INDOOR track...

The Hakone Ekiden 5th Stage has over 850 m of nonstop climb between 5 km and 20 km. Somewhat demanding and elite.
How much you wanna bet that Brett has never run it? He ain't got any nuts. If you kicked him in the crotch, it would hurt him too much cuz there ain't any nuts there.

False.

I love how tools like this guy neglect to comprehend the "elite" part of the original question.
There's a big difference between elites pushing it at the head of the pack and a couple of 2:40 blowhards acting like the course is beneath them.
If you have a picture of your self passing Rodgers, Hall or Meb over the "much bigger hills all the time in our training" please post them. Otherwise save your BS for the next time you act like a douche at your local 5k.

Don't be such a dick. If you have an opinion to share, do it without sounding like a 14-yr old. You're better than that.

Heartbreak hill is a midpackers hill. When was the last time Heartbreak hill had any outcome in the race.
