Wrestling out of the Olympics - No joke

I hope that they add sport climbing. Climbing has a long history and it's a sport that almost anybody can do. Who boxes or wrestles for fun or sport? Plus, climbing has big sponsors for support.

Maybe part of that is that there isn't a "LetsWrestle.com"? I have no idea, but I'd guess there are less wrestling websites as alternatives than there are running websites.

Swede Probably a fair point. I don't know enough about the other forms of wrestling. I was just thinking of the freestyle that we all know where take-downs, reversals, escapes etc. are pretty well defined.

Also makes me think of the fact that getting the Olympics back to events that are more purely objective instead of subjective (specifically "judged") would be a good thing.

With all the bad blood between IOC/WADA and Lance & UCI, I'm surprised they didn't remove cycling, or at least the road race.

Wow this is insane. The Olympics are filled with tradition, and what speaks to tradition any more clearly than wrestling?

Never in a million years would I think that an Olympic committee would get rid of wrestling. Sad.

I think it will hurt Flo-Rida more than anything. his head spun right round when the wrestlers would go down.

This decision should strike fear in every distance runner's mind. According to reports, the decision was based on "39 criteria, including ticket sales, television audience, and anti-doping programs."

The 5000m and 10000m aren't exactly strong in terms of ticket sales (by themselves apart from sprints & mid-distance), tv ratings, and anti-doping programs. I don't know what the other 36 categories were. Color of outfits? Ability to bribe judges?

I wonder how regional these decisions are - west european sports seem protected but north american sports are at risk.

western Europe won exactly 4 of 71 mens wrestling medals, and no golds. it is gone. They see wrestling as a minor, irrelevant fringe sport that takes up a lot of space in the village.

baseball, gone. Softball gone - europe had no chance in those either.

but dressage, field hockey, pentathlon all safe. Not to mention all the new nutty alpine sports in the winter that eventually europe will dominate.

I am starting to feel like an oppressed minority here.

right, and golf is in - another sport western europe will likely win some medals.

Wrestling should be part of the Olympics. If one sport has to go it is boxing. I like boxing but watching out right fixed matches in the Olympics really upset me.

nope, west europe won 23% of the medals in boxing - it stays.

They are voting on sports, not events. Track and field is safe.

if i was asked yesterday what summer olympic sports are safe i would have said.

1. track and field

2. wrestling (along with running oldest sport)

3. swimming and diving. (i think it counts as 1 sport not sure, if not at least swimming is safe)

4. gymnastics (at least womens gymnastics)

i am really shocked wrestling is on the chopping block for 2020.

also most of the NCAA schools may use this as an excuse to drop the wrestling programs as a previous poster said.

only safe NCAA schools oklahoma state, oklahoma, iowa state, iowa minnesota, penn state (and penn state could go if sanderson took a position elsewhere) and most of the big 10 schools (12 schools in big 10) the military academies. no other college is safe, some think cornell and a few others, but a few losing seasons and or a change of coaches could change that.
