I like how after years of toiling, Rupp runs 3:50.high and everyone and their brother accuses him of PEDs.
Some "18 yr. old" who improved from 13:20 - 12:47 (in less than a year???) Dismisses one of the top distance runners with ease... Not a word? Not a question mark?
I actually like that fact that rupp lost this race - all the people talking about how they cheat (NOP) just lost their argument.
Old guy here with some history. Vladimir Kuts in the '56 Olympics scorching the best of the rest with surges.
Murray Halberg of New Zealand winning the '60 Olympic 5000 with a big move with 3 laps to go.
Some guy named Kip Keino running many career highlight races with unpredictable bursts early in the race.
Brendan Foster dropping 60 second laps in big races to bust away for the win, or a spectacular effort for silver at the worst.
Great to see a new kid on the block with the guts to do this stuff.
Now Alberto and Rupp (and Mo) can train to deal with it as best they can. Loving it.

Nice stuff here. I knew of Keino's exploits, and have heard of Halberg's win, but some of the other items were foreign to me.
Komen's 1997 WC 5000m may be my favorite.

I know, and the two Ethiopians were not slouches. I don't know that Gebr's tactics were all that savvy, as much as Rupp wasn't on it. If Rupp covers the move, the US record goes down. Rupp knows better, he's studied enough races with Alberto to know what to do...he had to go on instinct and miscalcuated by 1.5 seconds or whatever, tight margin over such a long race.
The funny thing is, a few years ago the board would be creaming over a native board running that time, win or lose.
There is no point in discussing age anymore. There have been many 18 year olds who never got better. A few do get a lot better. Hagos is a top 10 5000 runner, maybe top 5.

Thank you for bringing some sanity to this madhouse! I just feel terrible for the REAl Juniors who lost to this age cheat. I understand perfectly well that Rupp should (and no doubt soon will) beat a man plausibly 10 years his senior.

east africans can often make huge jumps because they are not coming from a long career with a methodical system starting in high school or before. they may have one good opportunity and then another a year later so of course there will be big jumps. also, they tend to sack it if they are not feeling good or in the hunt for a top spot. seems like the "A for effort" rule is not really in their culture, it's more all or nothing.
the age thing doesn't really matter other than it sucks for legitimate juniors out there, but what can you do. the junior records kind of have to be thrown out the window. maybe if your a junior you look at the top time that is not east african and go for that. as for non juniors what does it matter? none. gebrhiwet will run what he does and his best times will be what they are whether they are done at what is reported as 18 or 28.
the only concern for our boys in portland is how to beat him and others like him, not their age.

Well I didn't bring it up but now that you are being rude I will point out how likely it is that GEBRIHWEAT is doping. The doping agencies in Africa are NOTORIOUSLY lax- Galen Rupp is constantly being tested and analysed whereas men like Gebhrawet basically disappear into the dark continent for months on end of training. Can you imagine how much PED use goes on? I bet that makes for some high intensity training when he is using EPO/HGH etc to recover quickly and avoid injury.
It's sad but I don't get too upset about Rupp losing to a doper. It's going to happen but Gebrhiewet will get his deserved punishment at some point- whether from doping agencies, karma, or in the afterlife, while Rupp can rest easily and train hard having preserved his integrity and morals.
