I do not however understand the disdain for engineers, social networking websites, and "the stuff you normally associate [with] big bucks at a young age." Are you saying people shouldn't get engineering degrees? Are you saying people shouldn't be entrepreneurs?

Boutique stuff still exists in the USA and for sure there is still "engineering" to be had, but a lot has left already--and a lot of the people here now are on visas, and work for much less than you would believe, especially in elec/SW.

There's a lot of engineering in the US, a lot of "real" engineering, and most areas of engineering are undergoing growth. Maybe you're biased because your job entails dealing with people who are shipping jobs out of the country? I hear a ton of complaints in my line of work about foreign engineers, particularly Chinese and Indian: they're poorly educated, uncreative, will steal your IP without a second thought, and so on. Many of my company's clients refuse to use Chinese manufacturers because there's no way to stop their designs from being stolen.

Engineering salaries are 'boom city' with nano-tech, clean energy, smart grid, shale oil, ultrasonic aircraft/missiles, deep space, exotic materials, remote everything, bio-tech, advanced material, you name it.

China, Iran, India, Korea, Taiwan, Pakistan, Israel and Russia have leveled the playing field with the US, Japan, and Western Europe and compete on the same terms.

God, some of you are clowns. Everybody makes 300k, runs 14:30 5k yet can bench 300, and has a ten inch d1ck. Give me a break. She has done great. No student loans and she has been working. Being an engineer is great, but give credit where it's due. Hell, most engineers are just undergrads at that point, 50k in debt making nothing.

Look in the mirror. Engineers making $250-300K are managers. For the 2011 class, the AVERAGE Computer Science major started for $70K. If you can write java with some experience, you can make $90-110K, without being a manager.l

Now tell me why I should tell my youngest, who is being recruited by Harvard to study computer science, that he should give up Harvard and go to work for Chipotle instead.

Software engineers and computer scientists are going to make SEVERAL TIMES what non-degreed people will make over their career.

The girl at Chipotle has done great given her abilities, but the comparison is ridiculous.

The smart bet is for your kid to study computer science. I doubt anyone will refute that! How do you know what the girl's abilities are?

You realize some people don't want to be chained in front of a computer their entire working life? I'll take my meager 50k as a firefighter. I guess it is good for my abilities. Tool.

engineering is not for everyone. don't feel bad if that's not your lifestyle. there's something in this world that you are talented at. if you can work tirelessly for hours on math/physics problems or software development for instance and really enjoy / relish the activity then you can be an engineer. but for the vast majority of people, they can't stand the thought, and they hate the idea of sitting there digging into the same problem for what seems to them an eternity.

Good for her, I wonder how many other 22 year olds are doing what she's doing in that industry. I would guess not many which is why her story warrants an article. You don't hear about the 22 year old engineer grad making x amount of dollars because there are more than a few of them.

Glad to hear hard work can still pay off.

There are tons of six figure jobs with no education, oil fields and correctional officers i'n California.

Exactly. Most of the responses to this thread are pathetic. How anyone can be anything other than impressed that a 22 yr old worked their way up to general manager of chipotle and makes a good living is beyond me. It sounds like there are a lot of replies with undertones of jealousy.

Thank god I'm good-looking and wasn't forced to choose engineering as my major in college. It would've been miserable studying all hours, and getting a desk job sitting behind a computer all day. I do sales, and maybe I work longer hours, but my "work" consists of going out to really nice restaurants with clients, and entertaining them to events and golf.

No, I'm not particularly liberal, and no, I'm not unimpressed by her success. It doesn't merit a thread, though. She's a moderately successful person, good for her. And? engineers make too much money. we live at a time when people care about how to deliver information and not the content of the information being delivered.
