That is exactly right and about the only way to make it livable is to have kids or wife who get school for free and more and more schools are cutting that benefit out.
I teach/coach in Illinois and make $50,000 salary and $5500 as head track coach and about $4000 as xc coach.
IL coach- where do you coach? I know that York paid Newton around $5g for coaching, so you are doing well indeed. How many years in service do you have?
Div. I women's head coach: are you happy with your choice, even with less money? Or do you wish you had stayed in high school?
Hey greenliner --
Your son isn't the head coach at Highland Park, is he? Does he make that much as the assistant, or is he at a different school? I live in the neighborhood, but teach in the suburbs.
Oh, just finished third year teaching (tenure!) with 32k for teaching, 0 to assist in CC, and $750 for assist in track (non-contract -- the head coach felt sorry for me
).
have those who have entered the coaching ranks within recent years find some sort of "coaching degree" to be an absolute must to get into high school coaching? my university offers a coaching minor; while i am completely befuddled by my future and what carrer path i should take, i could see myself being an assistant/coach somewhere down the line. would it be benefital to obtain this (it is only 19 hours) now?

It depends on the state. Where I live in Iowa, I believe you need to take four courses (which you can do at a community college over a weekend) to receive a "coaching endorsement". This is needed to coach in a public school.
Every state has different requirements, but more and more some kind of coursework is necessary to be a HS coach.
Greenliner,
I have nine years of experience. I believe Newton was able to do pretty well on the side with all of his speaking engagments, books, etc.
He does work at Highland Park, but he had to split the coaching tasks with another person last spring- he is the young kid there, slight and slender. So he is not an assistant but neither is he the head coach, if you follow. And he would not have been paid as much as he got except that a planned third coach was unable to participate.
Great for your tenure! Where do you teach? My son spent last year working at Highland Park but coached at Eden Prairie since the xc job was filled at HP. This year was all HP and next year he will play a larger role in the XC program. He'll be back from Hong Kong in a few weeks.
And for IL Coach, yes, Newton did well on the side, but you know, money was never his driving factor- he could have gone to a college years ago but never did. Now, in retirment from teaching, he just coaches, and only xc now. I am just glad you are being paid a fair differential for coaching, since as you see so many don't get anything near that.
