It reminds me when I was running my first marathon. It was an out and back course and I remember this one lady in particular. On the way out she jumped into the road and was shouting something like "this is what you are running for..." and pointing to her jacket. On the way back, she was in the middle of the road again shouting the same thing. This time waving her "Boston Marathon" jacket like a matador. I assume she thought I was running the race so I could qualify for Boston and get a cool jacket like hers. I finished 3rd in 2:31. So, yeah, that jacket was quite the motivation.

Back in 1996 when it was the 100th anniversary of the Boston Marathon I was working for adidas in Portland, which was, and is a sponsor of the marathon. We produced these beautiful limited edition letterman jackets with the Marathon Association logo on the front, large BAA in script on the back and leather sleeves. They retailed for about $250. Being a finisher, It was a cool jacket to wear. But there was a surplus, so the running department offered the employees the jackets at the price of $50! They sold a couple hundred of them to employees and their families. Everyone was walking around at work wearing these stupid jackets. I stopped wearing mine and left it in my closet.

What on earth would survivors of Hurricane Sandy do with a WORTHLESS finishers medal? After spending $347 (as a Canadian I get to pay a "special" rate) to register, pay $300 to fly in, $55 for a cab to our hotel, $1000 for 3 nights in a hotel, have every meal overcharged and underwhelming in quantity, read and hear that we are horrible people for even being there, stand in line to get in to the expo to hear ONLY other international runners, speak to runners from all over the world with each having a heartbreaking or heartwarming story of why they are there is it any wonder that at least some of these people would want some type of souvenir of what it cost (financially, physically and emotionally) to have been there?

Has anyone ever heard why international runners have to pay so much more? Seems like another rip off by the New York Road Runners Scam

I always wondered about that. I believe it is a higher entry fee for those running Boston also. There must be a reason for this. It doesn't seem fair to have to pay $90 more if you live in Toronto rather than Buffalo.

Don't listen to the naysayers--enjoy your medal!

Since the marathon organizers don't have too much they can do with the medals anyway (if the above poster is right, even the charity organization doesn't want them), you're doing a favor by taking the medal off their hands.

Plus, you did run a marathon, even if unofficial--since the official one wasn't available.

I have no particular bias for or against finishers' medals. If someone hands me one, I thank them and take it. If the race doesn't offer any, I don't feel deprived. Some medals, I was giving to nieces and nephews when they were kids. Some I keep as mementos, in particular for out of town races.

Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing what uses people could suggest for these medals. Melt them down and build new subway tracks with them? Put them in a time capsule and send them off following the Voyager space craft?

Maybe they would make nice wind chimes.

Those medals could be sandwiched with lithium paste and made into batteries that could power 400 homes!

How absolutely true: the five hour types not only prize the finishers medals, but generally come to the race with an entourage complete with signs. This decision by NYRR is not without precedent. Some years ago, that really hot year at Chicago when they funneled all but the elite finishers to a hastily constructed "finish line" before the twenty mile mark, an injured friend of mine who did not travel to chicago was sent her finisher's medal.

I don't know what year, or what race, the finisher's medal started; I think it was around the mid-80s. Once the first race did it, every marathon in America picked it up within a year. I haven't run a marathon since around 1996 and I have a shelf full of them. I should do the current marathoners a favor and sell the medals off on e-bay. It would allow a few old geezers to cross it off their bucket list and keep them out of races.

I sell my Boston medal every year. Pays for my entry into the next year's race.

ha ha ha out of all the crap you could read about Paul Ryan and his sub-3 hour marathon this might be the best indictment of all
