How is it 'honest' to run a tactic (pushing the pace in the lead) that is almost sure to result in you finishing out of contention vs running a tactic that will give you a better chance of a higher placing?
So wanted someone to keep the pace honest? Perhaps you would prefer if the race had rabbits, which I my opinion makes the race utterly boring.
Why not just walk for the first 4600 meters? Finish in around 45 minutes.

US runners would have done a lot better over the last 40 years to look to Bob Schul instead of Steve Prefontaine as a model of how to run the 5000. US runners mostly forgot how to kick.

Not really. Lagat is amazing, Rupp beat him at the trials and has been developing his kick for years and it showed in the 10000. Lomong should have been set up perfect in this race. Just a crappy race for the US guys and as a fan that race sucked balls.

Yes 5K and 10K were disappointing - imagine if Rupp had not got silver LR would have stormed the stadium with pitchforks.
Mo is a great guy and athlete, but way below the likes of El G, Geb etc (forget the peds for now). He just got lucky that in this Olys the competition were just dumb or lame or something.
I'm still amazed that such a bunch of on-paper fearsome guys could let him get away with it.
Maybe Mo will echo Lasse Viren when he said "..the question is not how I ran so well, but why everyone else ran so badly"

THIS is a typical LR poster... someone that has run a lot but does not have near enough talent to run in the top tier. They base EVERYTHING on their own experience in the sport... where every race is seen as a chance to PR - or failure. Since they are not at the front... it is all about time. They simply don't understand top tier racing although because of their experience they THINK they do...

That may be true. So, if you know you aren't going to win, wouldn't you want an honest pace so you could be happy with the time you ran? I would feel less than satisified to run 9 or 10 laps at tempo pace and then watch the field run by me in a sprint finish.
Brendon Foster and Steve Cram also called this race and the women's 1500 "disappointing". They raced at the highest level and don't get the allure of this kind of race.
The morons on this board who call this type of race "interesting" are stupid. A true tactical race has surges and changes of pace or whatever it takes to disrupt your opponent. Letting the pace be slow for almost the entire race and settling for a sprint finish makes sense only for a few runners, not the whole field.
I would call that last mile significant. You... not so much.

Absolutely a stupid, weak, boring, uninspired race.
Lazy, uninspired jogging for 10 laps. Through 10 laps my own personal PR was faster.
These guys need to grow some balls.

This is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen posted on these forums - and that is saying a lot. Let's see - this pace is kind of slow so I think I'll pick up the pace - which might just tire me out too much and leave me with nothing- but that's ok - at least I can give up my medal and feel good that I ran 9 or 10 solid laps - the medal is not that important.

In any case, there should be some good races over 5k in the next few weeks. But they won't be this important.
Both the 10000 and 5000 races were terrible. They might as well have handled the gold medals to Mo before hand, letting both races fall to the final kick.
To disrespect to Mo, but he had a lot of luck getting this 5000/10000 double. Twice a dumb field lets the race play into his hands and the injuries and off form that Kenny B has been suffering. You can be sure Mo at his fittest can't hold a candle to 2008 Bekele.
Is it races like this that contribute to the lack of interest in distance running? Is there any other Olympic event, besides the distance events, where the competitors don't go all out to try and win?
